Richard Allen Wertz
Richard A. Wertz, 84, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, March 18, 2016.
Celebration of life: 2 p.m. Thursday at Lucas Funeral Home, 1321 Precinct Line Road, Hurst.
Memorials: In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Richard to the Alzheimer's Association at alz.org.
He was born Sept. 28, 1931, in Comstock, Mich., to Joseph and Mary Wertz. At an early age he acquired his foundation of great work ethic. In 1954, he joined the U.S. Army where he served overseas during the Korean War. Upon returning, Richard married Mary Grover in February 1956. He worked at Consumers Power Co. in Michigan, where he retired from after being a dedicated employee for 40 years. Shortly after retirement, Richard and Mary moved to Texas to be closer to their family. He continued to work by giving five years to the Grapevine-Colleyville ISD as the crossing guard for Bransford Elementary.
He had a passion for fishing and camping and he happily enjoyed sharing these pastimes with his three grandchildren. He enjoyed being a great-grandfather to his "lil punkin," whom he enjoyed spending time outdoors with.
Richard will be remembered as a humble, hard-working and loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who cherished his family dearly.
He was preceded in death by Robert Wertz, Joseph Wertz, Kenneth Wertz, Alta Perry and Shirley "Gert" Nance.
Survivors: His wife of 60 years, Mary E. Wertz; son, Todd A. Wertz and wife, Lisa; daughter, Lori B. Phillips and fiance, Richard Lemmon; grandchildren, Jennifer Herren and husband, Blake, Benjamin and Brittany Wertz; great-grandchild, Reagan Herren; brothers, Ron Wertz and William Valencourt; and sisters, Audry Jenkins and Jane LaRose. He also leaves behind his beloved Shar-Pei dogs, Tucker and Dolly; and many more family members and friends.
