Richard Wisch Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Barrett Leber Funeral Home - Tenafly on Nov. 12, 2024.
The family of Richard Wisch, 81 years old, of Fort Lee, N.J. wishes to announce his passing as of November 11, 2024. Dr. Wisch was a dialysis patient for over 10 years. Recently, he developed complications leading to heart failure and decided to cease dialysis. Dr. Wisch used his remaining time to celebrate his life with his family and friends. He was so appreciative of the life he was able to live and the experiences that he had.
Dr. Wisch grew up in the NJ towns of Bergenfield and Tenafly. From childhood, he worked in a family-owned catering business in Cliffside Park, N.J with his beloved parents Peggy and Bill Wisch. This subsequently led to his interest and work in the food and beverage and tourism industry. Dr. Wisch completed his bachelor's degree at St. John's University, his master's degree at New York University and his doctoral degree from Columbia University. Among his many jobs, Dr. Wisch taught in the NYC public school system and ran a commercial real estate venture too. The culmination of many of his passions, interests, and experience also landed him in the role of teacher and eventually Dean of the International School of Hospitality and Tourism Management, as well as the Dean of Global Studies, at Fairleigh Dickinson University.
Dr. Wisch loved mentoring and readily provided support and guidance to whomever sought it out. He was deeply generous and gave unconditional love to his family and extensive network of friends. He is survived by his loving family and friends, including Mary McNeish Stengel, Elizabeth West Brown, Marsha Diamond, K.C. Kerrington and countless more loved ones from around the globe. Dr. Richard Wisch will be deeply missed!

I am heartbroken at this news. A hotel colleague introduced us in 1988, thinking we had much in common and indeed we had many lovely times over the years. I so admired his commitment to excellence in hospitality education and there is no question he was an academic pioneer. Even though we lost touch for a while, he sent such a generous wedding present when I married. I will cherish the times in his company. Deepest condolences to his family and close friends and his many students.
