Mr. Altman's name, for many, made for a weighty resume. His choosing to allow others to exhibit a flow of individual energy showed his generosity in a climate where often there is not. Psalms 62:11,12.

Robert Altman is in the highest ranks of America's greatest filmmakers. He gave us his all, didn't he? Thanks to his courageous, independent spirit, he blessed us by giving it all to us on film.

For Robert...
You gave us some of the
finest films ever made.
WEEP NOT FOR ME
Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.
Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.
I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.
Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.
Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.
Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

There will never, ever, EVER be a better movie than Nashville. I always keep two copies on hand; one to watch and one to give away. I watched all he did; my second favorite was Come Back to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean. Dang...the best is gone.

A man who can direct excellent films with an all star cast achieved something that not many directors could accomplished. M*A*S*H, THE PLAYER, SHORT CUTS, and even A PRARIE HOME COMPANION were all wonderfully done films. But NASHVILLE is one of the best films ever made. Altman took the famous faces into one film and made people instead of people in a situation. We will be sadden that Robert Altman is gone, but we should be happy that we got to experience his art. My heart goes out to his family, friends, and the people that worked with him. And I wanted to thank Mr. Altman for giving us so many great classics.

The Altman movies are the memories of my youth and the turbulent sixties. A great cinema artist and a creative voice that is lacking in the beginning of the 21st Century at the movies. Mr. Altman is a wonderul human being who will be greatly missed.

I am a film student and growing admirer of ROBERT ALTMAN. This gentleman's work is as warm and wise a view of Americana as I have ever had the pleasure of laying witness to and it was a wonderful time he spent on this earth. From NASHVILLE (1975) to SECRET HONOR (1984), THE PLAYER (1992) and SHORT CUTS (1993) to GOSFORD PARK (2001) and A PRAIRIE HOME COMPANION (2006; his final film, ironically about death and saying goodbye!), Altman was his own kind of director and didn't give a damn about the "establishment," the "right way" to do things or even whether his films were popular. He cared about sharing his view with the world, and hopefully, maybe a few would get it. He was the type of filmmaker whose heights every other should aspire to someday reach. I know I do.
I look forward to the many Altman films I have yet to see, from VINCENT & THEO (1990) to STREAMERS (1983) to THIEVES LIKE US and CALIFORNIA SPLIT (both 1974), and many others, as well as the films I'll get to watch again and again...

Bob Altman dying is like my father (whom I never met) dying because I grew to love him.
Back in 1979, I was honored to be his personal assistant on preproduction for both HEALTH and POPEYE. I did everything from slice baby swiss cheese for him to typing the script on an IBM Selectric typewriter as he and Frank Barhydt and Paul Dooley thrashed it out over Monte Carlo sandwiches up in the western-most penthouse at the Don CeSar. And, yes, I did learn to roll those funny little cigarettes for him. He was so nice to me, treating me as a regular member of his film family.
Ten years later, when my mystery novel based on my experiences working on the film was published, he bought several hundred copies to give to friends and complimented me on the book, EXTREME CLOSE-UP.
But most of all, he was like a father to me, helping me through an especially difficult time back in 1979.
I loved Bob (the first thing he did when I met him was say, "Call me Bob.") and I will always miss him. He was the dad I never had.

Mr. Altman would have been the American Fellini had "Nashville" been his only film. But in his autumn years -- yet another to disprove F. Scott Fitzgerald's belief there are no second acts in American life -- we were treated to "The Player" and "Short Cuts," among other great films. "A Prairie Home Companion," which I treasured this summer, is a perfect valedictory to this great director, who had his finger firmly on the pulse of the movie-going public.

What timing, A Prairie Home Companion was in my mailbox when I got home today. Altman-- a genius (I don't use that term lightly) as well as, it seems, a wonderful human being. And my sympathies to the family on their loss.

Every once in a while, in my work, I get to meet one of my heroes. So it was a few years ago when I worked for a week on "Gingerbread Man" and had the opportunity to meet and speak (briefly) to Robert Altman.
Things were a little hectic when I got there, and Mr. Altman sort of apologized for my having to come in during all the chaotic filming. I told him, no, actually, that that explained a lot about his work.
He got the joke, was unoffended, and that, as they say, was that.
My condolences to his family, especially his son, who was warm and gracious to me during my time on the show.

I’ve looked forward to seeing Robert Altman films for almost 35 years. He has always presented a unique view and approach while at the same time providing a wink with a visual homage to Renoir, Hawks, Welles, Ophuls, and others. Additionally, he included his family and friends in the production each of his films and giving many a start in the industry. Sympathies to his family and his extended industry family.

I was honored to work with Mr. Altman when he filmed "The Gingerbread Man" in Savannah, GA. I was introduced to him and he responded how much he liked my name. "Nicole Sage, I like that name, nice to meet you." He changed the history of film and introduced many characters interacting/speaking at the same time. We rented "A Parie Home Companion" last night and we will watch it tonight in his honor.
