Fortified with the Sacraments of Holy Mother Church, Robert Henry Bernhard entered into eternal rest on Monday, February 23, 2026, at the age of 85.
Bob was the beloved husband of nearly 60 years to Joan Elizabeth Bernhard (née Borgmeyer), whose unwavering partnership was the greatest joy of his life. He was the devoted and loving father of Donna (Trey) Kirtian, David (Linda) Bernhard, and Daniel Bernhard; and the cherished grandfather of Ally (Austin) Fischer, Lauren Bernhard, Abby Kirtian, Max Kirtian, and Gabe Kirtian.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond H. and Vera T. (née Jennewein) Bernhard, who surely welcomed him into God’s embrace. Robert was also a dear brother-in-law, cousin, uncle, great-uncle, great-great-uncle, and a loyal friend to many. His warmth, generosity, and steady presence will be profoundly missed by all who were blessed to know him.
A proud veteran, Bob honorably served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. His deep faith shaped every part of his life. He and his family were long-time, committed members of St. Matthias the Apostle Catholic Church, where he served as a Eucharistic Minister for the homebound; an act of service that reflected his compassion for others.
Bob dedicated countless hours to helping those in need through his volunteer work with the St. Vincent de Paul Society, St. Matthias the Apostle Chapter, and he was a proud member of the Knights of Columbus Council 742. His faith was always active, always visible, always lived.
In his personal life, Bob found his greatest happiness in the meaningful moments spent with family. A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, he was delighted to be present in the lives of his children and grandchildren. Whether attending events, lending a hand, or simply sharing in laughter, he gave his love freely and fully.
Bob also enjoyed time on the water by boating, fishing, and taking in the calm of the outdoors. Known by many as someone who could fix anything, he was always ready to help. His hands were skilled, but his heart was what truly made him remarkable.
In memory of Bob’s life of faith and service, Masses are preferred, but memorial contributions are appreciated to the St. Vincent de Paul Society or the Parkinson’s Voice Project.
May Bob’s legacy of kindness, devotion, and unwavering love continue to shine in the hearts of all who knew him.
Visitation will be held from 10-11:30 am, Saturday, February 28, 2026, at St. Mark Catholic Church, 4220 Ripa Ln, St. Louis, MO 63125. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30 am also at the Church. Interment will be Monday, March 2, 2026, at 9:30am at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery St. Louis, MO; Family and friends will gather for procession to the cemetery at 9am at John L. Ziegenhein & Sons South County Chapel 4830 Lemay Ferry Rd.
