Robert Leroy Bilton, affectionately known to all as “Lefty,” passed away peacefully on February 20, 2026, at the age of 92. Born on September 27, 1933, in Sumter SC, Lefty lived a life defined by devotion—to his faith, his family, his work, his friends, and the many communities he called home.
He was the beloved son of Claudia Amerson Bilton and Hessie Lee Bilton, and the brother of Joseph Bilton. At the center of his remarkable life was his cherished wife of 67 years, Doris Marlene Bilton, lovingly known as Molly. Their enduring marriage was a testament to loyalty, partnership, and deep abiding love.
Lefty was the proud and loving father of John Bilton (Beth), the late Robin Henry (1962–2024) (Bill), Karen Lester (Lewis Sr.), and Michael Bilton (Linley). He delighted in his grandchildren: Taylor Boyd (Cameron), Jennifer Bilton, Hunter Harris (Alex), Lewis Lester, Jr., Jacquelyn Lester, Hayden Holland, and Mason Holland. His joy multiplied with the arrival of his great-grandchildren: William Boyd, Benning Boyd, Harper Harris, and Lillian Harris. He loved his family fiercely and fully and nothing brought him greater pride than their accomplishments and happiness.
Lefty was a proud graduate of College of Charleston, earning his Bachelor of Science in Chemistry in 1955. His time there was among the most treasured seasons of his life. A natural leader and gifted athlete, he served as President of the Student Body, was a member of Pi Delta Kappa Fraternity, and received honors including Most Outstanding Leader, Senior Superlative, and Most Athletic. His excellence on the basketball court led to his induction into the College of Charleston Hall of Fame in 1987, and he also captured the State Regional Championship in tennis during his senior year. He later earned his Master’s in Chemistry from Clemson University in 1957.
Following graduate school, Lefty began his distinguished career with Monsanto Chemical Company in 1957, first assigned to the Cleveland office. Over nearly four decades, his talent, discipline, and integrity carried him across North America. He and Molly made homes in Holyoke, Massachusetts; Detroit, Michigan; Atlanta, Georgia; and St. Louis, Missouri, before finishing his career in Detroit as Director of Sales of Saflex North America. A three-time recipient of the Master Salesman Award
(1967, 1968, 1969), Lefty built not only a successful career but lasting friendships everywhere he went.
He proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1958 to 1960, stationed in Natick, Massachusetts.
After retiring from Monsanto in 1996, Lefty returned to Atlanta and, with his dear friend Frank Kelley, founded BK Associates, Inc. He continued working with characteristic energy and enthusiasm until officially retiring at age 85—a testament to his tireless work ethic and love of meaningful endeavor.
An avid golfer, Lefty belonged to four country clubs over the years and celebrated one of his favorite achievements—a hole-in-one—at the Country Club of Charleston. He also loved to travel, exploring the United States and visiting numerous European countries. Whether on the golf course, in the boardroom, or around the dinner table, Lefty’s outgoing personality and warm spirit drew people to him. He was a true Southern gentleman—gracious, kind, disciplined, and quick with a smile. He made friends throughout the world and kept them for a lifetime.
Lefty lived with purpose, integrity, and a generous heart. His legacy is one of leadership, loyalty, love, and unwavering devotion to those he held dear.
Visitation with the family will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., followed by a Funeral Service at 2:00 p.m., on Wednesday, March 4th, at Ingram Funeral Home, 210 Ingram Ave., Cumming, GA 30040.
