Robert Brownwell Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Johnson Funeral Home & Cremation Services on Dec. 4, 2025.
ROCKY MOUNT – Robert Edward Brownwell, Sr., age 75, passed away on Wednesday, December 3, 2025. Born in Giessen, Germany on July 22, 1950, he was the son of the late Robert Sheridan Brownwell and Nancy Naomi Barnhart Brownwell. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Kenneth Brownwell; sisters, Linda Mossbrook, and Joan Meyers.

A long-time and active member of Rise Church, Robert lived a life dedicated to service and spiritual growth. His commitment to his faith was evident in his involvement as a Life Group Leader, serving as a Gatekeeper, and his compassionate work with the Prison Ministry. He always sought to be learning and growing, reflecting a deep curiosity about the world and his walk with God.

Robert found joy in many passions. He loved the freedom of the open road, often seen riding his motorcycle. This love of adventure extended to his family, as he loved taking his grandchildren on motorcycle rides and on various adventures. His hands, whether steering a bike or serving in ministry, were also skilled at intricate tasks; he found great pleasure in building plastic models and completing jigsaw puzzles. He was also a keen Civil War enthusiast, perpetually eager to delve deeper into history.

The heart of Robert's life was his family, especially the children and grandchildren he cherished. He was the enthusiastic PapPap, known for bringing laughter and playful chaos into the home, including his infamous games of tackle football in the yard and hockey in the house. He didn't just play with them; he passed on to them practical skills and independence, presumptuously "teaching" them how to drive.

Robert's dedication to his family, his faith, and his constant desire to learn touched countless lives. His memory will live on in the stories, the lessons, and the unconditional love he shared.

Robert leaves a legacy of faith, adventure, and boundless love. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, whose presence will be profoundly missed by all who knew him.

Robert is survived by his wife of 56 years, Bernadette Perles Brownwell; sons, Robert Edward Brownwell, Jr. (Lisa), Christopher Sheridan Brownwell (Dawn); grandchildren, Tyler Brownwell, Hayley Vance, Ryan Brownwell, Timothy Brownwell, Kyle Brownwell, Tory Brownwell, Josiah Brownwell, Micaiah Brownwell, and Justus Brownwell; great-grandchildren, Paula Brownwell, and Winnie Brownwell; sisters, Edna Harmon (Paul), and Kathryn Mitch (Pete).

A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, December 6, 2025, at 2:00 PM at Rise Church 3520 Bishop Road Rocky Mount, NC 27804 with Pastor Jason Cockrell officiating. A visitation will be from 12:30 PM to 1:45 PM prior to the service.

Flowers are welcome.
