Robert Buchanan Jr., 80, of
The Villages, Florida, passed away peacefully at Mayo Clinic Hospital in Jacksonville, Florida, surrounded by loved ones, after a four-year battle with lung cancer.
Robert was born on May 13, 1945, to Robert and Marjorie Buchanan. As the oldest of four children, he was affectionately known as "The Boss" to his siblings-the protector, problem-solver, and steady presence who always looked out for them. That same sense of responsibility shaped his life, extending to family, friends, teammates, and anyone who needed a hand. He was a graduate of Superior Central High School and the University of Wisconsin–Superior.
In 1970, Robert married the love of his life, JoAnn Kay Buchanan, who remained his true north throughout their 51 years together. They welcomed two children, Kristine and David. To his children, Dad was their rock in the truest sense-knowing when to step in with steady guidance and when to step back so they could find their own way. No matter what life brought, he was there-no questions asked, always ready to support them. He was always there with advice for his siblings, and his nieces and nephews remember his wisdom. When JoAnn fought through many illnesses later in life, he became her devoted caregiver, showing patience, strength, and love.
A hard worker and successful self-employed businessman, Robert built and grew his customs brokerage company in
Duluth, MN, for over 30 years. Yet he never let work overshadow what mattered most-family and the passions that brought him joy. A lifelong curler, his team reached the finals of the 1981 Silver Broom, and he had the honor of being part of the USA Curling Team at the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville, France. His work took him to wonderful locations, and he made sure to bring his family along, turning business trips into treasured memories. A devoted Green Bay Packers fan, Robert loved nothing more than watching the games surrounded by friends and family.
In 2004, Robert and JoAnn retired to
The Villages, Florida, where they embraced all the community had to offer and truly enjoyed life to the fullest. Their days were filled with pickleball, golf, neighborhood activities, enjoying Florida beaches, and dinners with friends. Robert even returned to softball, joining a national traveling team called The Venom-playing with the joy of a teenager well into his late seventies. He loved bringing people together, hosting friends and family, and cooking memorable holiday meals. Since his passing, the outpouring of love and support from neighbors, friends, and teammates is a testament to the kind of life he lived and the lasting impact he made.
Robert was a fun and energetic grandfather to Ruby and William, delighting in creating memories full of laughter and adventure through golf cart rides around the neighborhood, trips to the pools and beaches, and visits to all the Florida tourist spots. Among their favorite times were the evenings spent riding the golf cart to look at Christmas lights. Bob was a loving father-in-law to Lisa and Chad, welcoming them into the family with warmth and kindness.
Over the past four years, Robert faced illness with remarkable strength. He never complained, choosing instead to meet each day with gratitude and an appreciation for life's simple joys. In his later years, he found renewed companionship, laughter, and happiness with his very special friend, Elaine Zink. Together, Bob and Elaine enjoyed countless concerts and shows, went on cruises, attended church services, shared dinners with friends, and embraced the vibrant community life of The Villages. His family is deeply grateful for the love, comfort, and support she brought him during his final years.
Robert is survived by his daughter, Kristine (Chad West); his son, David (Lisa); his grandchildren, Ruby and William; his sisters, Beth (Sam) and Laurie Zahn (Bob); many beloved nieces and nephews; his special friend, Elaine Zink; and many extended family members and friends who loved him deeply.
He was preceded in death by his wife, JoAnn Kay Buchanan; his parents, Robert and Marjorie Buchanan; his brother, Thomas Buchanan; his nephew, Paul Buchanan; his niece, Leslie Zahn; his parents-in-law, Stanley and Mary Gambeski; and his brothers- and sister-in-law, Diane Sain, Richard Gambeski, and Stanley Gambeski.
Robert lived a life marked by strength, kindness, humor, and unwavering loyalty. He faced his final days with courage and grace, and though our hearts ache, we find comfort knowing he is now at peace-free from pain and reunited with those he loved. We can see him now with JoAnn by his side, playing catch with Tommy, while Paul grills steaks and Leslie fills the air with laughter.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: Little Blessings at North Lake Church; 975 Rolling Acres Road; Lady Lake, Florida 32159. A celebration of life will be held at a later date in both Florida and Minnesota.
