Robert Burch Obituary

Robert James Burch, Sr.

Robert James Burch, Sr., known to most as Bob, passed away at Chippenham Hospital on January 6, 2026, at the age of 79. He was born on June 29, 1946, in Norfolk, Virginia, to Marvin Jackson Burch and Ella Ann Fowler, both of whom preceded him in death.

Bob is survived by his wife, Harriet Simpson Burch, whom he married on August 6, 1976. He is also survived by his children, Michael Eric Burch and his wife Ashley, Jamie Elizabeth Matlock and her husband Jeremy, Robert James Burch, Jr. and his fiancée Raya, and Daniel Harrison Burch and his wife Linda. He leaves behind his grandchildren, Joshua Nolan Matlock, Jillian Louise Matlock, and Victoria Alta Tolhurst Burch.

Bob dedicated his professional life to education and public service through Fredericksburg City Public Schools. He began his career at James Monroe High School as an English teacher and coach. He coached football, winning the State Championship in 1986 and 1987. He also coached basketball and track. He later served as Principal before moving into Central Office administration. He held the roles of Supervisor of Special and Alternative Education and later Director of Operations. In that role, he oversaw the construction of the new James Monroe High School and Lafayette Upper Elementary School buildings.

Service shaped Bob's life well beyond his career. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club, where he served as president; the Elks Lodge, where he served as Exalted Ruler; and socialized as a member of the Cavalier Club. He served on the Stafford County Cable Commission and helped guide the development of high-speed internet access in the county.

Bob was a three-time Pro Tour Duckpin Bowling Champion and an avid golfer. He spent many hours on the course at Four Winds Golf Club.

He was a faithful and active member of Antioch United Methodist Church. He attended services every Sunday and served the church in many capacities over the years.

Of all his roles and responsibilities, Bob loved teaching and coaching the most. Above all else, he loved his wife and his family.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, January 12, 2026 at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg. A smaller, intimate service will be held on Tuesday, January 13, at Antioch United Methodist Church.

In lieu of flowers or gifts, donations may be made to the James Monroe High School Football Program.
