July 6, 1938 – December 16, 2025

Robert L. Chappell, age 87, of Mt. Laurel, New Jersey, passed away peacefully on December 16, 2025. He was born on July 6, 1938, in Atlanta, Georgia, to the late Leroy and Mary Chappell (née Kelley).

Robert previously resided in Mount Laurel and East Windsor, New Jersey; and Atlanta, Georgia. A proud veteran, he served in the United States Army as a Captain in the Chemical Corps.

He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from Georgia State University and went on to receive a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from the University of Georgia. Robert enjoyed a distinguished career as a chemist and computer systems analyst/manager at Whitehall Laboratories in Hammonton, New Jersey. His professional accomplishments included the development of two chemistry patents filed with International Flavors & Fragrances in New York. He later provided consulting services in the pharmaceutical industry, working with companies such as Merck and Pfizer.

In retirement, Robert pursued his many interests, including computer technology, reading, politics, fishing, travel and photography. As an avid photographer, he traveled extensively across the United States capturing wildlife, landscape and nature photography. He was a devoted member and past president of the South Jersey Camera Club. His award-winning photographs were exhibited and sold both online through Robert Chappell Photography and in person at New Jersey venues including the Perkins Center for the Arts in Moorestown, Fine Arts Gallery in Mount Holly, among others.

Robert was a practicing Catholic and a devoted member of St. John Neumann Roman Catholic Church in Mount Laurel for over 50 years.

He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Carolyn M. Chappell of 52 years, and his siblings, James C. Chappell and Suzanne E. Chappell. He is survived by his sister, Lynne Myers; his son, Dr. Stephen Chappell; his daughter, Cynthia Desderio (Tony); and his cherished grandchildren, Julia Desderio, Kayla Chappell, and Katherine Desderio. He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.

A private Funeral Mass and inurnment service will be held at the request of the family.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Robert's memory to Marist School in Atlanta, Georgia, or St. John Neumann Roman Catholic Church in Mount Laurel, New Jersey.
