Robert Cichon Obituary

Cichon, Robert F. ALBANY Robert F. Cichon, a husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and fine gentleman, was born on Christmas Day, 1931, to Genevieve (Chmielowicz) and Frank Cichon; the first of 13 children. He passed away on May 5, 2022. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 61 years, Gloria (Heitzman) Cichon; his son, David; brothers, Leonard (Phyllis), Thomas (Diane), Edward (Helen), and Donald (late Helen); and sisters, Geraldine (late Thomas) Stillman and Mary Jane (Joseph) Aidala. He is survived by his daughter, Linda (Michael P.) Storonsky; sons, Russell and Douglas (Paula) Cichon; grandchildren, Michael C. Storonsky, M.D., Natasha C. (Stephen) Becker, Jesse Parent, and Taylor Anne Cichon; great-grandson, Stephen Becker Jr.; sisters, Joan (late Sebastian) Audi, Carol (late Arthur) Norris, Kathleen (John) Bastiani, and Sandra (Bernie) Kaese; brothers, William (Noreen) and John, and many nieces and nephews. Robert was born in Depew, N.Y. and was raised in Albany. Following graduation from Albany High, he served with the Army in the Korean War where he earned his combat infantryman badge as a morse code operator. He worked for 45 years at General Electric/Lockheed Martin as a draftsman. In the 1970s, he was one of the first trained in the then state of the art CAD (Computer Aided Drafting). He transferred to Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory in Schenectady where he assisted in the design of nuclear submarines for the U.S. Navy, including the stealth sub, among other assignments. He was a quiet, capable, and determined man who designed his own home. An avid reader, he could fix anything he could find in a repair manual, including his children's cars. He enjoyed square dancing with his wife with the Altamont Station Squares, playing cards, fishing, helping his sons design and build winning Pinewood Derby cars, serving as a Boy Scout leader, assisting with Gloria's antique collecting, and most of all, spending time with his grandchildren. Viewing and calling hours will be held on Tuesday, May 10, from 9-10:30 a.m. at New Comer Cremations & Funerals, 343 New Karner Rd., Colonie. A graveside service will follow at 11 a.m. in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery, 303 Sand Creek Road, Albany. Masks will be required for the services. Dear Linda, Russ, Doug, and the Cichon family,
May the Holy Trinity bless and console you during your bereavement as Uncle Bob's soul enters the Kingdom of Heaven to eternally dwell with our Savior Jesus Christ. Never have I EVER met a man who was finer, more dignified, more respected by EVERYONE around him, and more humble than my Aunt Gloria's husband of 61 years, Robert Frank Cichon. My cousin Doug Cichon's poignant and eloquent eulogy on May 10, 2022 during Uncle Bob's funeral at St. John's Lutheran Cemetery in Colonie, New York allowed all in attendance to feel and understand the unparalleled INTEGRITY, SELFLESSNESS, and SACRIFICE FOR OTHERS with which Uncle Bob routinely conducted himself. There is AN ANGEL right now knocking on the front door of the Pearly Gates of Heaven, and the Good Lord is about to allow Uncle Bob's soul to be reunited with his soulmate of 61 years, Gloria Shirley Heitzman, and to experience the grace and peace of our Almighty Father into perpetuity. Reverentially and with complete condolence, nephew Al Heitzman and wife Mary. XXXOOO

I will always cherish the memories spent in Bob's and Gloria's company. Always such a warm, thoughtful, kind and hospitable man, whom I loved and respected dearly. Leonard so often reminisced about the times he spent with his older brother--fishing, playing cards weekly with Bob and the Heitzman family and just hanging out together. He was very proud of being Linda's godfather. Although we lived a continent apart, Bob and Gloria always conveyed their love and kindness, and even after Len's and Gloria's passing, the holidays still brought Bob's thoughtful and kind words. You are in my prayers, and I will always lovingly remember you, Bob.
