It is with profound sadness that I share the news of my father's passing. Prior to meeting my mom (Jane), Robert (Bob) Collins grew up in Hicksville, NY and served in the US Coast Guard. He was also a 14 year member of the Hicksville Volunteer FD.
After he and Jane settled in Port Jefferson in 1970, he joined the Port Jefferson Fire Department where he was a member for 51 years, rising to the rank of Captain, Engine Company 3. His highest honor, in our eyes, was Grand Marshall of the 2012 4th of July Parade. He was one of the founding members of the Brookhaven Town Volunteer Firefighter's Museum and spent many Saturdays working on restoring the building. He loved antique fire engines and even got to own an old Hicksville fire engine (that he had rode on as a volunteer) in his retirement that made appearances in local parades and two weddings. In PJ, he and his late friend Jim, kept the antique fire engine (known as The Frog) running for musters and parades. He also was curator of the firehouse museum.
He was a house painter by trade and took pride in his meticulous work. He also enjoyed woodworking and had several home projects over 55 years. As a member of the Port Jefferson Historical Society, he helped with building restoration projects and has a building, Collins Carriage House, dedicated in his name.
He also dedicated his time and talents as a member and Trustee of the First United Methodist Church of Port Jefferson.
When Diane still lived in Port Jefferson, we would go to Suffolk County Fire Safety Educator's Association meetings together. He is the reason Diane was a firefighter for 14 years.
He is survived by his wife Jane, daughter Diane and her husband Darren Eggerman, Denward Collins II (late Ruth), William Collins (Barbara), Nancy Collins (late Donald) and many cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and friends.
Thank you all for your love and support to Jane over these past several years. She truly signifies "till death do us part".
In lieu of flowers, we ask that you make a donation to a
charity of your choice, in Robert's name and honor.
