Robert Crayhon Obituary

Published by Cape Cod Times on Sep. 15, 2010.
STRATFORD, Conn. — Robert Crayhon, 49, died in Connecticut Sept. 4, 2010 at the home of his devoted friends, Jonathan and Linda Lizotte. He leaves his loving family: his mother, Ann Conroy Randall and her husband, John, of Chatham; and his father Joseph and his wife, Alison, of Pittsfield, VT.

He also leaves his two sisters, Regina Crayhon and Victoria Crayhon; two brothers; Walter Conroy and his wife Alexandra Conroy, and James Crayhon; and twin nephews, George and James Conroy.

Born in Mt Vernon, New York, April 30, 1961, he grew up in Pelham, NY and attended Iona Prep, Colgate University, Oberlin College, where he majored in classical piano studies. He attained an M.S. degree at SUNY, and then began a brilliant career as a nutritionist, living and teaching in Boulder, CO for several years. His writing and clinical presentations were seasoned with his quick wit and innate sense of humor, allowing his audience to laugh as they learned. His research was impeccable. His book "Nutrition Made Simple" became an instant classic. He was often referred to by friends and associates as the most ethical and moral person they knew.

Armed with a treasure chest of talents, Robert was an accomplished classical and jazz pianist, a stand-up comic, producer and co-writer of a spoof musical performed off-off Broadway, contributor to National Public Radio and television. He gave of himself in many ways to many people, and was truly loved.

A Memorial Service is planned for October 16, 3 PM, at the Unitarian Universalist Meeting House in Chatham.

Robert would want each of us to do something kind for others. Donations in his name may be made to the Alliance for National Health:

Through Robert I came to believe that with nutrition we could really help people improve their lives. But he was so much more than a brilliant mentor, he was so talented and yet humble and ever generous with his time and resources to all. I will miss him always.

Robert, you packed more into your short life than many do in twice the years. The world is a darker place since you left, but surely your light is shining brightly where you are now. Robert, you are greatly missed. more than words can ever say. Our tears will not stop flowing and our hearts will never heal from this painful loss. Robert managed to pack more living into his short life than many will do in twice the years. Although the world has become a darker place since he left us, surely he is a shining light wherever he is now. Robert, you are greatly missed. More than words can ever say. The tears won't stop flowing and the pain of this loss will be with us for a long, long time.

I interviewed Robert on several of my radio shows, and often was a co-presenter with him at many lectures and conferences. Robert could always be relied on to offer the most up to date references, and always gave wonderful, evidenced based presentations. His passing is a loss to his family and colleagues, and also is a reminder that our destiny is not fully self determined. We are part of the larger web.
Much love to Roberts family and friends as we honor his life work, by continuing the journey.

To Robert's Family,

I was deeply saddened to learn of Robert's passing and wish to extend to you my condolences and prayers. Robert was a most remarkable man. He literally saved my husband's life and guided him through several wonderful years of living. Will lost his battle with cancer 6-8-10...and to the end he spoke daily of Robert and his deep gratitude to him for "gifting" him with so much extra time. I shall carry the memory of this wonderful man always....God Bless you Robert.

Deeply shaken by the untimely passing of this amazing man. BoulderFest opened up a whole new world for me. BurlingtonFest this summer was not the same without him.

Not knowing your dear son, but reading the many messages on line makes me realize how much you are suffering now. My sympathy. My older son Michael also attended Oberlin, but not as a music student.

I went to one of Robert's seminars in Colorado which really opened my eyes about nutrition.
I also had the pleasure of speaking and laughing with him in NY. I called about an article written by Jane Brody. Can't repeat what he said, but he was funny as hell. Thanks, Robert for affecting so much change in the world.

I am so sorry to hear of Roberts passing. Robert was a mentor and a wonderful teacher of nutrition. I have been a fan since the early days of Designs for Health. His seminars were the most enlightening and entertaining I've ever experienced. He will be greatly missed. I send my condolences to his mother and family. You should be very proud of him and his many accomplishments. He has helped so many.

Robert Crayhon was introduced to me by J.J. Virgin. I enjoyed my first lecture in Santa Monica and he turned me on to Taurine. It helped my heart and many of my patients. I learned a plethora of information from him at Boulderfest and his many CD's. My tears flow hearing the news of someone who taught so many about true health. Please accept my donation on his behalf. Robert was one of a kind. His ability to make you think and laugh lightened many hearts. My oldest daughter Tasya was so enamored of him and still talks of playing checkers with Robert at every Boulderfest from 2005-2008. He enriched my heart, my soul, my life. Having the privilege of working with him for 2 years was something I wouldn't trade for anything. Robert you made everyone you came in contact a better person. I will keep you in my heart and soul forever.

Our best tribute to Robert would be to carry on what he started, in eating right and sharing our knowledge, and, perhaps more importantly, perpetuating the patient teaching, kindness, generosity, humor and overall Menschlichkeit that characterized him May he live on in our remembrance and perpetuation of his acts of goodness and deeds of lovingkindness.

How do words express the loss to the health community of a pioneer and mentor and friend to so many. He will always laugh and "spread the word" of good health in our hearts and memories.

It is difficult to put into words just how much Robert meant to me. He was my mentor throughout every single step of my nutrition career, at times my boss, and most importantly, my dear friend. I have a heavy heart and miss Robert tremendously.
