Robert L. Cunningham, 80, of Lumberport, passed away on October 16, 2025. He was born June 30, 1945, in Clarksburg, a son to the late David Cunningham and Delberta Fox Cunningham. Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother Richard Lee Cunningham; and two half-sisters, Patty Helmick and Karen Helmick.
He is survived by his wife of over 60 years, Jewell Maxwell Cunningham, whom he married on September 27, 1965. He's also survived by his daughter Christy Cunningham Hall (Michael) of NC; son James (Bucky) Cunningham (Allison) of Shinnston; grandchildren Andrew Hall (Elizabeth) and their children Presley, Maverick and Stetson, Kelsey Hall and David Hall of NC, Alexis Sprout (Caleb) and their daughter Carter of Lumberport, and Jenna Cunningham of Shinnston; step-sister Kim Cunningham Fortney (Scott); nephews Tim Maxwell, Scott Maxwell, Andy Maxwell, and Todd Cunningham; several great nephews, nieces, and cousins; and his dogs Hercules, Slick, Gracie, and J.D.
Robert graduated from Lumberport High School in 1963 and attended Salem University where he played basketball and football. He served in the US Army during the Vietnam War. He retired as 1st Lieutenant from the WV State Police with 25 years of service. He was a cabinet and furniture builder after retirement, and loved to rabbit and deer hunt. Robert was a member of the WV State Police Retirement Association, the Mon Valley Beagle Association. He was Ambassador of the "Table of Knowledge" at Saturday mornings breakfast table at Sunset- Ellis Restaurant." He was a loving grandfather and great-grandfather.
Friends will be received at Harmer Funeral Home from 12:00PM-7:00PM on Friday, October 24, 2025, with a memorial service at 7:00PM with Pastor Sherman Goodwin and Tom Bell officiating.
