Robert Dean Dial Sr., 88, of Spartanburg, passed away peacefully on July 25, 2025, at the Upstate Community Hospice House in Landrum, South Carolina. He was born in Spartanburg County on September 15, 1936, and was the son of Boyd and Edna Dial. He was the widower of the late Mary JoAnn Dial.
Robert is survived by his 3 children, Robert Dean Dial Jr. (Erika), Robin Dial Gibson (Tim), Carol Dial Lewis (Chris), and his 4 grandchildren, Graham, Samantha, Stephen, and Spencer. He was predeceased by his siblings – Barbara, Larry, Kay, and David.
After graduating from Fairforest High School in Spartanburg, Robert enlisted in the Airforce, faithfully serving his country for 4 years while being stationed in Alaska and Texas as a Radio Operator. After serving his time in the Airforce, he worked as a plant supervisor at Hoechst Celanese Corps for many years. Once he retired, he opened a picture framing business out of his garage, worked at USC Upstate as a security guard, and finally at Dunbar Funeral Home, before retiring for good.
Robert was a member at Anderson Mill Road Baptist Church for 36 years where he served faithfully. While he was able, he served as a door greeter, handing out smiles, laughter and candy to any and all who walked through the door. He also served as the class president of the Senior Adult small group class. He was very proud to call himself a Christian in front of anyone and would be quick to tell people about the Lord wherever and whenever he could.
My name is Spencer and I am proud to be called one of Robert’s grandchildren. He was the kindest, caring, and most compassionate person I have ever known. Any problem you had he would be quick to try and help you navigate. I never saw my grandfather without a smile on his face and joked with us all the time. Every person he came by he would do his best to make them laugh or brighten their day even if it was only a little bit. I miss him a lot, however, it’s not a goodbye from me, but a see you later, you ole G.O.A.T.
