Robert B. Edwards, 87 of Warrenton, passed away Saturday, December 9, 2023 at the Fauquier Hospital.
Robert attended Penn State University from 1954 to 1959 on a basketball scholarship. He earned his Master's degree in Parks and Recreation. He served in the US Army at Fort Ord, California from 1960 to 1962, assigned to Youth Activities. While there they ran the concession stands for the Pebble Beach Golf Tournament. He was also tasked with accompanying a top secret shipment to Guam. While he didn't know any details, he enjoyed the brief R & R in Hawaii on the return.
In 1963, newly married, he began his career in local government as the Parks and Recreation Director for Middletown Township, New Jersey and Cheltenham Township, in suburban Philadelphia. He joined the Army as a civilian, working in a similar capacity. His first job was overseas, so he, his wife Jeanne, two young sons and a cat, moved to SHAPE Belgium in 1975. Another move to Giessen, Germany for 3 ½ years, returning in 1980. Back in the United States, Robert worked at Ft Monmouth, NJ, Ft Eustis, Va. and Vint hill, retiring when the post closed in 1997.
He followed Penn State sports, basketball in general, and took up golf after retiring. He and his wife enjoyed traveling, visiting many states east of the Mississippi by car, then cruising to Alaska, the Caribbean and the Baltic countries.
Robert was a member of the Greenwich Presbyterian Church in Nokesville and the Mt. Carmel Masonic Lodge #133 in Warrenton.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Jeanne D. Edwards; two sons, Robert V. (Rosemary) Edwards of Culpeper, VA and David M. (Teresa) Edwards of Knoxville, MD; four grandchildren, Alden (Katie) Edwards of Falls Church, Harrison (Ashley) Edwards of Falls Church, Nathan (Kailey) Edwards of Freeport, ME and Elian Gonzalez of Arlington, VA.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday December 20, 2023 at Moser Funeral Home, 233 Broadview Ave.,
Warrenton, VA from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. A funeral service will be held Thursday, December 21, 2023 at the Greenwich Presbyterian Church, 15305 Vint Hill Road, Nokesville, VA starting at 10:00 a.m.
