Robert "Bob" Thompson peacefully passed away on November 17, 2021, in Clarkston, Michigan, at the age of 85. His bright smile and love of adventure will be missed by all his loved ones and cherished friends.
Robert was born to Ray and Annie Thompson in Buffalo, New York, on August 15, 1936. He attended Tri-State College in Angola, Indiana, and earned a degree in mechanical engineering. After graduating, he was drafted and served in the United States Army in Alabama for two years. He went on to work as a seatbelt engineer at General Motors (GM) for 39 years, eventually retiring in 2001.
Robert loved to travel and spend time with friends, passions that only grew after he met his loving wife Sandra at Tri-State College. During their more than 60 years together, Robert and Sandra ventured as far as Italy and Spain, sharing countless laughs and bottles of wine with friends along the way. At the many dinner parties in their home in Clinton Township, Michigan, Robert showed that he knew his way around the kitchen.
Nothing brought Robert more joy than skiing through fresh powder in Summit County, Colorado, which he did until he was in his 70s. The mountains were rivaled by the golf courses, tennis courts, and bike trails of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, where he and Sandra enjoyed vacationing and relaxing with friends. Robert was also an active member of his church, Immanuel Lutheran in Macomb, Michigan, participating in weekly services and a men's bible study. As a member of the Shriners fraternal organization, he dedicated his time to the Shriners Hospital for Children.
Robert is survived by his loving wife, Sandra; his extended family, Lynn and Brian Taylor (Emily, Nathan, and Derrick), Mike and Jennifer Maizland (Lindsay, Samantha, and Trevor), and Beth and John Hargraves (Taylor and Madison); sisters- and brothers-in-law; and his many beloved nieces, nephews, and dear friends. Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Annie Thompson; his brothers, James and Donald Thompson; and his sister, Betty Hoock.
Robert's loved ones wish to thank everyone who visited, called, prayed, and devotedly cared for him over the last four months.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, November 29, at Immanuel Lutheran Church (47120 Romeo Plank, Macomb, MI 48044). The visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. and the church service at 11:00 a.m. Burial and Military Honors will take place at Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery.
