Robert Dale Etter, known by many as Bob, gained eternal rest on Thursday, February 22, 2024, in the comfort of his home with loved ones by his side. He was born on Saturday, February 5, 1944, in Indianapolis, Indiana to the late Donald and Mable (Carr) Etter.
Bob dedicated 46 ½ years of employment to Allison Transmission as an electrician. He was also a pilot and enjoyed rebuilding and flying his airplanes, a Beechcraft Bonanza V-tail, and a Piper Tri-Pacer. He could do almost anything when it came to mechanical work, running heavy equipment and construction on the farm. In his younger years, he would often enjoy drag racing and working on cars with his brothers Ronnie and Gary, always driving a Ford.
He was a member of St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church in Martinsville, Knights of Columbus, American Legion Post #230, lifetime NRA member and local car club, the Tread Trimmers. He served his country honorably in the US Air Force Reserves for 6 years.
On May 7, 1966, he married his wife, Catherine A. (Hacker) Etter, she survives in Martinsville. He is also survived by a host of loving family including his three sons, Patrick Etter, William "Will" Etter (wife, Connie) and Aaron Etter (wife, Laura) of Martinsville; brother, Gary Etter (wife, Janet) and sister-in-law, Nina Shelton of Martinsville; six grandchildren, Alyssa, Mason, Conner, Kasey, Kiley, and Kendall and sixteen nieces and nephews.
Along with his parents, Bob was preceded in death by his brother, Ronald Etter and one nephew and one niece.
Family and friends are invited to visit on Wednesday, February 28, 2024, from 2:00-7:00 pm at Neal & Summers Funeral & Cremation Center. Pastor John Maples will officiate a service celebrating Bob's life at 7:00 pm Wednesday, immediately following the visitation at the funeral home. In honoring his final wishes, his earthly remains will be cremated.
