Robert P. Fitzgerald

Robert P. Fitzgerald, a longtime Milton and Charlestown resident, passed away October 5, 2016 at the age of 81. He was the son of the late John Francis Fitzgerald, Jr. and Catherine (O'Hearn) Fitzgerald and the grandson of the late John F. (Honey Fitz) Fitzgerald US Congressman and Mayor of Boston. He was a loving brother of the late Reverend John F. Fitzgerald, III and the late Frederick R. Fitzgerald and brother in law of Marcia (Roak) Fitzgerald of Marlborough. He was a devoted father leaving behind two sons, three daughters and their families; Robert P. Fitzgerald, Jr. and his wife Kerry of Needham, Maria Fitzgerald and her husband Jonathan Herlihy of Weston, Rose Doherty and her husband Tim of Needham, Paul Fitzgerald and his wife Michelle of Northampton and Danielle Valle Gilchrist and her husband Peter of Charlestown. He also leaves 10 grandchildren who he adored. He grew up in Milton, attended St. Gregory's Elementary School in Dorchester, Boston Latin School Class of 1953, College of the Holy Cross Class of 1957 and received an MBA from Babson College in 1959. Due to his skills running with a football he was also inducted into the Boston Latin School Athletic Hall of Fame. His business career was spent in the banking and insurance industries. He started his banking career at Boston Safe Deposit and Trust and then became President of Harbor National Bank in Boston. After Harbor National Bank was sold he entered the insurance brokerage business when he joined Corroon & Black of MA and later International Insurance Group. Later in his life he worked with his friend Gerard Doherty out of his law offices on Franklin St. in Boston. He volunteered his time and energy to many charitable boards and foundations including: The American Ireland Fund Life Trustee, Director, Inaugural Dinner Chair and Assistant Treasurer, John F. Kennedy Library, Director, Daniel Marr Boys Club; Corporator, Children's Hospital; Board of Incorporators, University Hospital; Corporator, Babson College; Trustee, Boston Latin School Association; Trustee and Treasurer, Eunice Kennedy Shriver Center; Director and Treasurer. He was also an avid golfer having been a longtime member of Woodland Golf Club in Newton. Bob was very politically active throughout most of his life having spent many years working on the political campaigns of his late cousins Jack, Bobby and Ted Kennedy. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held in St. Bartholomew Church, 1180 Greendale Ave., Needham on Tuesday, October 11th at 10:00 AM. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Visitation will be held in the Eaton Funeral Home, 1351 Highland Ave., Needham on Monday, October 10th from 4-8 PM. Interment at St. Joseph Cemetery in West Roxbury.
