Robert Lee Godfrey, Sr.

1940 - 2025

Robert Lee Godfrey, Sr., 85, resident of Greenwood and husband of Linda Gunnells Godfrey, passed away Monday, December 29, 2025, at his home.

Born in Greenwood, he was a son of the late John Thomas Godfrey and Margaret Morrison Godfrey. Mr. Godfrey was a graduate of Greenwood High School and served in the U.S. Army Reserves. He was previously employed with Pepsi and Coca-Cola of Greenwood, worked at several local service stations, and was the longtime owner and operator of Robert's Body Shop, which he founded in 1959.

Mr. Godfrey was a member of New Life Pentecostal Holiness Church, Greenwood Masonic Lodge #91, Hejaz Shrine Temple, and the Greenwood Shrine Club. As a teenager, he was active in American Legion Post 20.

Surviving in addition to his wife of 64 years, are a son, Chris Godfrey (Jennifer Banks) of Greenwood; a brother, Pete Godfrey of Hodges; grandchildren, Hayden Godfrey (Victoria), Chandler Godfrey Burke (Tyler), Ryanne Godfrey Manley (Joshua), and Lauren Brown (Aaron); seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

He was predeceased by a son, Robert Lee Godfrey, Jr.; three brothers, Frank Godfrey, Floyd Godfrey, and Marvin Godfrey; and three sisters, Dot Shirley, Dora Timms and Pat Knight.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, January 2, 2026, at New Life Pentecostal Holiness Church, with Rev. Tommy Wooten and Chaplain Col. Ken Godfrey officiating.

Burial will follow in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends at the church from 12:00 until 2:00 p.m. Friday, prior to the service.

Pallbearers will be Roger Dale Knight, Mike Godfrey, Darryl Porterfield, Perry Powell, Randall Barrett, and Terry Shirley.

Memorials may be made to the Greenwood Humane Society.
