Robert Dean Grubbs, age 91, of
Memphis, Tennessee, passed away peacefully after a long journey with dementia, surrounded by the love and care of both his family and the devoted staff of The Arbors at Schelling Gardens, where he had resided since 2019.
Born near
Harrisburg, Arkansas, on March 5, 1934, Robert faced hardship early in life with the passing of his mother when he was just eight years old. He was lovingly raised by his father, his older sisters, and his aunt, Liva Miller. Robert graduated from Vandale High School in 1953. Before graduation, he married Greta Vance, with whom he shared two sons.
In 1954, Robert proudly enlisted in the United States Air Force, completing basic training in San Antonio, Texas. His service took him to Biloxi, Mississippi; Tripoli, Libya; and St. Johnsbury, Vermont. Trained as a radio operator and highly skilled in Morse code, he welcomed his first son, Keith, on June 25, 1957, during his time in Vermont. Robert was honorably discharged in December 1957.
After returning to Memphis, Robert began a long career as a hardworking provider. He worked for Bryce Printing Company and later dedicated more than twenty years to Red Ball Motor Freight. Following their closure, he continued his career as a contract mail hauler with H.B. Phillips until his retirement.
In 1979, he met Martha Fryar, who became his beloved companion. Her children-Dennis, Glenda, Steve, and Ricky-and their families welcomed him wholeheartedly, and Robert embraced them as his own.
A lifelong athlete, Robert had a remarkable passion for baseball and fast pitch softball. Known for his powerful pitching, he played for numerous teams in Arkansas and Memphis. His talent was so respected that opposing teams would sometimes leave rather than face him on the mound. He competed in "A League" fast pitch softball, winning multiple city championships, and continued playing well into his late forties. His brother Tommy was often his catcher, creating cherished memories between them.
In his later years, dementia slowly claimed his abilities, but never his spirit. He remained pleasant, gentle, and kind throughout his time at The Arbors, where the staff cared for him with genuine affection. His family is deeply grateful for the compassion they showed him each and every day.
Robert is preceded in death by his father Eli Hensly Grubbs; his mother Estelle Miller Grubbs; his sisters, Mary Evelyn Hooper and Margaret Earline Barger; his brother, Thomas Eugene Grubbs, and his son Kevin Dale Grubbs.
He is survived by his son Keith Dawayne Grubbs (Patty); his grandchildren Heather Dawn Grubbs and Casey Duane Grubbs (Candice); and his great granddaughters Amelia and Scarlett. He is also survived by the Hollis and Fryar family-Dennis (Michelle), Glenda (Chuck), Steve (Terri), and Ricky (Betty)-who became part of his heart and life.
Robert will be remembered as a devoted family man, a proud veteran, an exceptional athlete, and a gentle soul whose kindness touched everyone fortunate enough to know him.
