Robert Hank Obituary

Robert Andrew Karl Hank

1955-2023

Salt Lake City, UT-Robert Andrew Karl Hank passed peacefully on March 13, 2023. The second oldest of seven siblings, Bob was born in Gardena, California, to Robert and Genevieve Hank (nee Janowicz) on January 22, 1955. The Hank household, including Bob's maternal grandparents, steeped Bob in Christ-like and family-centered values, while also instilling the value of adventure during road trips in their station wagon.

Having conquered polio as a child, Bob attained a unique appreciation for physical abilities that remain with a person after disease wreaks its toll on their body. Bob was a champion at encouraging others and advocating for all with special needs. Graduating from Gardena High and then Harbor College, Bob cultivated a credo of service and kindness as a counselor at Camp Joan Meir and as a nurse, receiving recognition for "Best Bedside Manner." Relocating to Utah as an adult, Bob worked in health care throughout his career, working as a nurse at St. Mark's, Jordan Valley, Holy Cross, and U of U hospitals, as a CPR instructor, and as the owner and operator of his own medical-alert business.

Together with his lifelong partner, Marcia Patricia Hank (nee Majors), Bob devotedly raised two daughters. Bob loved his family and often returned to California for reunions, and he continued the Hank tradition of family bonding during road trips with his wife and children to relatives in Washington and Cleveland, Utah, and to Arches, Dead Horse Point, Mesa Verde, and Mount Rushmore.

Bob enjoyed photography, trains, sunsets, basketball, folk music, and buttered pancakes. Bob was the nicest of guys. He provided jolly companionship to family, in-laws, neighbors, coworkers, friends, and about anybody he encountered. Above all, Bob granted his helping hand by giving, lifting, and supporting; his offers of a ride, a beer, or a conversation were endless. Later in life, Bob welcomed visitors as a host at Tanners Flat and Spruces campgrounds in the Cottonwoods.

Preceded in passing by his grandparents, cherished mom & dad, and buddy, Michael Busch, Bob is survived by the love of his life, Marce; daughters, Hannah and Karla (Greg); beloved Utah Jazz fan Edith King; granddaughter, Madison; sisters, Mary Tapp (Tom) and Eve Kelso (Kenney); brothers, Geno (Julia), Don, Dave (Mary), and Bill (Beth); cousin, Gloria; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

The Hank Family extends heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Anna Ibele and the healthcare teams at University of Utah Hospital and U of U Health Craig H. Neilsen Rehabilitation Hospital for your tireless, professional, and invaluable care and support, as well as Father Paul Rayappa.

All are welcome at a memorial, to be announced, which will be held in a canyon along the Wasatch during warmer weather. In lieu of flowers, please honor Bob's memory by emulating his kindness, inclusion, and camaraderie.

The last time I saw Bob was in 2007, but he has been in my mind and heart always. We had a special connection as coworkers with the same birthday. I live in Georgia now, but when I lived in Salt Lake, Bob invited me up to his campsite for a day. I wanted to ask him a question tonight about buying a camper, and when I googled his name, I was led to this obituary. I am saddened for those he left behind. He was the model Christian I have always wanted to be. Tonight I will have dinner with him. A great plate of food, something off the grill, and a beer. And I will stare at the trees, listen to the birds and crickets, and when the sky has turned from blue to black, I will see the heavens and invite him down for a spell. Tomorrow, I will wake up and hope that I can be more like him.

From the family of Beth Kane Hank (married to Bill)

To those who were important in Bob's life: Please accept our deepest condolences on the loss of your brother, husband, father, relative, or friend. Our good stories came largely from his youngest siblings, Bill and Eve.
Bob was a role model in their earlier years, to the point where they all were counselors at Camp Joan Meir.
Memorial trees are an appropriate remembrance for this man, continuing his nurturing legacy of helping to make the world a better place. Bob had some hard challenges in his last days and seemed to meet them with equanimity and positive resolve. May he rest in love and peace.

I´m just so saddened by this. Bob was our neighbor for a few years while we lived on Sierra Way.
My family and I have very fond memories of Bob and Marce and Hannah while we lived there.
Bob was so unique. He emulated what it meant to have Christlike qualities; always a kind word, loving everyone he came across.
I can still hear his laugh in my mind.
So many great memories of gathering with the Hank´s and the Busch´s in the yard at evening time, chatting and laughing and watching the kids play.
I love Bob. I´ve missed him through the years, and even more so now. A great era is now a great memory.
Bob, I´m sure you´ve found Michael and Colemichael by now. Give them a hug for me, and we´ll see you in the future.
God bless you, man.
