Robert Stanley Hanson, age 92, died on March 5, 2025, of congestive heart failure after a period of declining health in Denton, Texas. He was living at the Lake Forest Village retirement community.
He was raised in Detroit, Michigan by his parents Alice Anna Marie Kirchoff Hanson and Raymond Forsing Hanson. Graduating from Cooley High School in 1951, he continued his education at Iowa State College in Ames, Iowa, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in 1955. He went to McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago, earning his Bachelor of Divinity degree in 1959.
Bob served churches in Denver, CO; Rochester, MN; Monahans, TX; Arlington, TX; Paris, TX; and ended his career in a new church development in Flower Mound, TX. Along the way he earned additional degrees - Master of Theology from San Francisco Seminary and Doctor of Ministry from McCormick Theological Seminary. In Monahans he initiated the AAU swim team and then the High School swim team with the help of Judy Palmer and also coach Richard Sybesma.
Upon retirement in 1997 he did volunteer work for the Presbytery; helping develop new churches, often for people immigrating from other countries. He also worked on developing a community garden and an immigration service in Denton. Bob liked to direct new endeavors in churches and the community. He deeply cared about the welfare of people, wildlife and the environment. Reading, music, and gardening were passions of his.
Reverend Hanson is survived by his wife, Joann Elizabeth (Niehaus) Hanson, age 91; three children: Brian (wife Paula), Tina (husband Ed), and Stuart (wife Teresa); and also five grandchildren [Amber, Christine, Andrea, Briana and Ben] and three great grandchildren [Ezekiel, Nathaniel and Martina].
Bob will be remembered and loved by many, knowing that his life has left a profound spiritual legacy.
A memorial service has scheduled for April 26, Saturday, at 2:30 pm. It will be held at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 2200 N. Bell Ave., Denton, Texas.
