Robert Harvey
July 5, 1926 - December 16, 2023
Robert Harvey, 97, passed away peacefully in his home during the early hours of December 16, 2023.
He was born July 5, 1926, in Thompsonville, IL, to parents Robert Harvey Sr. and Jess (White) Harvey. The elder of two sons, Robert showed a keen interest in all things mechanical from an early age. During the waning days of WWII, he was drafted into the Army and sent to Japan.
He married Mable Harvey in the summer of 1947. Robert attended the David Rankin Trade School in St. Louis. They then followed the lead of many in the south, heading north to the Quad Cities where high-paying factory jobs with union benefits were plentiful. He landed a position at Farm-All, installing transmissions on the assembly line for 23 years. He continued his second job as a self-employed auto mechanic.
When Mable fell ill, he was her primary caregiver. They celebrated 73 years of marriage before her death in 2020.
He retained his driver's license and in no way was anyone's image of a feeble nonagenarian. A child of the Great Depression, he believed in a helping hand, not a hand-out. His family and countless others benefited greatly from his humor and endless generosity.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, William Harvey; daughter, LuAnn; son-in-law, John Flowers; and great-grandson, Curtis.
He is survived by daughter, Brenda "Jill" Flowers; son, Brad (Joyce) Harvey; sister-in-law, Ruth Harvey; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and best friend, Henry Toops.
A visitation will be held at Wendt Funeral Home, Moline, on Thursday evening at 4:00 PM, followed by a service at 6:00 PM. Burial will be on Friday morning at the Rock Island Arsenal.
In lieu of flowers, Robert would ask that you be kind.

I worked with Bob in 1975 at IH Farmall Dept. 66. I was a 22 year old new guy. I learned a great deal from Bob working on that transmission line. He was skilled, efficient, easy going, and a great person to work with. I will always remember that smile.
