Robert George Hines, 78, of Monticello, Iowa, passed away on January 2, 2026 at St.Luke's Hospice in Cedar Rapids following a courageous battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his loving family.

Bob was born on March 5, 1947, in Monticello, Iowa, the son of George and Lois (Schneider) Hines. Bob graduated from Sacred Heart High School in 1965. He then went on to Upper Iowa University, graduating in 1970.

Bob married Susan Kay Paulsen on February 4, 1967, in Monticello, where they raised their four children. Bob was a teacher and coach for 29 years. He spent the last 25 years of his career as a middle school English Literature teacher in Anamosa. He coached varsity baseball and middle school basketball. He was a member of the Monticello Cubs baseball team for 30 years. He was most proud to have played with both his father and his son. He enjoyed the many friendships he made during his years of playing. Bob was a life-long Chicago Cubs fan. During his retirement he enjoyed watching games with his mom, spending time with family, working on old cars, playing with his dogs, going on car rides with Sue and watching his grandsons play baseball.

Remaining to cherish Bob's memory are his wife, Sue; children, Tami (Greg) Takes, Mike (Stacey) Hines, Tracy (Phil) Mugan and Marcy (Todd) Lopez; grandchildren, C.J. (Shannon) Takes, Ben (Christine) Takes, Nick (Kally) Takes, Lorna Lopez, Danielle Lopez, Noah Hines, Nate Hines, and eight great-grandchildren; his sister Becky (Jim) Madden and nephew B.J. (Crystal) Greer; sisters-in-law Nancy Paulsen and Lisa (Bob) Moore and brothers-in-law Tom Paulsen and Steven (Judy) Paulsen.

Preceding Bob in death are his parents George and Lois Hines, his in-laws Ralph and Joyce Paulsen and his brother-in-law Ron Blong.

Private family services and burial will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with interment in the Sacred Heart Cemetery. Goettsch Funeral Home has taken Bob and his family into their care. The family would like to extend a special thank you to
St. Luke's Hospice for their kindness and compassion in Bob's final days.
