Robert Hornsby Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 15, 2009.
Robert Saunier Hornsby, Jr., 28, affectionately known as R.S., of Williamsburg and Charlottesville, died January 15, 2009. Grandson of the Lois Saunier Hornsby, son of Robert Saunier Hornsby and Ann Skinner Hornsby, and brother of Susannah Bruce Hornsby, R.S. was a beloved soul, inquisitive spirit, scholarly mind, a respected and jubilant musician, and a man of excellent humor and kind heart who will be missed by the many who knew and loved him. After attending Williamsburg-James City County Public Schools and Hampton Roads Academy, R.S. graduated from Episcopal High School in Alexandria, VA in 1999, where he was awarded the Selby Barnes Papin Medal for Excellence in Spanish. While at Episcopal, R.S. studied abroad in Segovia, Spain. He also worked as an intern on Capitol Hill for Congressman Cass Ballenger (R-NC) R.S. attended the University of Vermont in Burlington, where he graduated with degrees in Spanish and Philosophy in 2004. An accomplished guitarist from an early age, R. S. lent his talents to many, many bands. He first joined his uncle, Bruce Hornsby, onstage at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival in the summer of 2000. He continued to perform with his uncle, both live and in the recording studio. He can be heard on the albums “Halcyon Days and “Intersections, and is a featured soloist on the upcoming Bruce Hornsby album, still in production. R.S. was preceded in death by his grandparents Robert Stanley Hornsby, Wilson Farant Skinner, and Lucille Fulton Skinner. He leaves behind aunts and uncles Bruce R. Hornsby and Kathy L. Hornsby, Jonathan B. Hornsby and Paige P. Hornsby, Elizabeth Skinner Chappell and G. Edward Chappell, and W. F. Skinner, Jr. and Hope S. Skinner, as well as a host of cousins, and innumerable friends. There will not be an official funeral service in the traditional sense. The Hornsby family believes that mourning and celebration are best done on each individual’s own terms. The 24th of January is R.S.’s birthday. If there is a day to celebrate life, let it be that day. Remember sweet and glorious music, long and hearty laughter, and the joy of friendship and love. To hear R. S.
