Obituary published on Legacy.com by Darst Funeral Home on Nov. 5, 2023.
We remember and honor the life of Robert "Bob" Hughes Jr., a loving husband, devoted father, proud grandfather and great-grandfather. After a long and hard-fought battle with cancer, Bob was called to be with God on November 1st in his family home in
Houston, Texas surrounded by loved ones.
Bob was born on December 19, 1941, in
Concord, California. A long-time resident of
Kingwood, Texas, he left an indelible mark on the community. Bob used his time wisely, and more often than not in service to others. He could often be found with a smile on his face volunteering his time at the food pantry at Mission Northeast. He brought his own unique way of connecting wherever he went, developing deep friendships with fellow volunteers and the people they served. He brought comfort, warmth, and laughter to their lives. Bob was the picture of an ideal neighbor. Helpful, knowledgeable, and always willing to lend a hand, Bob developed close relationships with the families in the cul-de-sac, known by the children affectionately as "Mister Bob".
In his professional life, Bob achieved the rank of E9, Master Chief in the Navy, and retired after 20 years of distinguished service. Spending a portion of that time on aircraft carriers in the Vietnam War, Bob began working on some of the earliest computers used by the United States Navy as a programmer. He was a true patriot, dedicated to defending his country.
After his military service, Bob earned a Bachelor of Science degree in computer science from the University of West Florida. He eventually adapted his technical and analytical skills to work in the corporate world, working for many years as a business consultant for Shell Oil. As fate would have it, it was through work at Shell that he met Debbie, the love of his life.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Bob was a man of deep compassion and community spirit. Bob was a faithful member of Second Baptist Church in Kingwood for many years. His faith was a cornerstone of his life, guiding him in his actions and interactions with others.
Bob was known for his generosity and kind, peaceful spirit. His love for and encyclopedic knowledge of western movies was unparalleled, and he had an impressive collection of films from the legendary Republic Studios. Bob's collection of Western memorabilia continued to grow over the years, an impressive assemblage of collectibles harkening back to his boyhood admiration of silver screen good-guys like Roy Rogers, Hopalong Cassidy, and John Wayne.
Above all else, though, Bob absolutely cherished his beautiful family. He was a dedicated and devoted husband to his wife of 41 years, Debbie, and found immense joy in being a father.
Robert is survived by his loving wife, Debbie Hughes (née Hicks), as well as his children and their partners: Heather and Dan Galloway, Holly Hughes and Peter Yarrow, and John and Debra (Tower) Stewart.
He is survived by his granddaughter Candice (Hemminger) Conn and her husband Chris Conn, grandson William Tower, and grandchildren Madison Stewart, Makayla Stewart and Jennifer Hughes. Great-grandchildren include Ethan and Aidan Hemminger.
He was preceded in death by his parents Ollie and Robert Hughes Sr., as well as his beloved sons, David Hughes and Robert "Bobby" Hughes III, who is survived by his wife Sherri Hughes and daughter Kiana Hughes. He was preceded in death by Angel Tower, wife of William Tower.
A memorial service will be held at the Houston National Cemetery for Veterans on Wednesday, November 8th at 9:15 am. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to Mission Northeast or another charitable organization of your choice.
Robert Hughes was a man of unwavering character, compassion, and faith. He will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him
