Robert Stewart Irving

Robert Stewart Irving, age 83, passed away on December 10, 2025, in Greeley, Colorado. Born on March 15, 1942, in Patterson, New Jersey, he lived a life marked by academic accomplishment, intellectual rigor, and a commitment to the study and protection of the natural environment.

Dr. Irving earned a Doctorate in Botany from the University of Texas at Austin and later completed a law degree at the University of Arkansas. He brought these fields together in his professional work as an environmental lawyer, professor, and consultant.

Bob spent much of his life in Arkansas and Colorado, regions that enabled him to maintain a connection to the outdoors. He devoted significant time to his love of skiing, hiking, canoeing, birding, and botanical identification. During the winter seasons, he also served as a ski instructor at Winter Park, sharing this passion with others.

His personal life included many marriages and other significant relationships, which formed part of his broader life experience. He was known for his sharp intellect, analytical mind, and appreciation for informed discussions.

He is survived by his children, Deanna "Dee" Woodcock and Stewart Irving, and his adopted children, Melaine FitzRoy and Michael Schaefer; his brother, Peter Irving; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Robert Stewart Irving will be remembered for his dedication to hard work and his pursuit for love and adventure.
