Mamie Nell and Bob Jones Obituary
Mamie Nell (Froman) Jones was born on January 19, 1932. She departed this life
at the Long-Term Care Center in Johnson, Kansas on April 1, 2020 at the age of
88. Nell was the fourth child of Eldon (Jack) Froman and Edna (Williams) Froman
of Clayton, New Mexico. Mamie Nell attended school at Konantz and later
attended Walsh High School. Her youth was full of adventures with her siblings
and the many shenanigans at the Konantz school days with her good friend and
later sister-in-law Loretta (Hetrick) Froman. One story she liked to tell was when
she and Loretta were fed up with Baca County and decided to buy a bus ticket and
get out of here.
While they were waiting on the curb at the bus stop, Nell's brother, Bill, came
driving by in his car and yelled out the window "where you girls going"?
Loretta shouted back "as far as our money will take us"! Bill's response was
"Okay, I'll pick you up in Campo" and proceeded to pass the bus stop. Later
Mamie Nell was introduced to Loretta's brother's friend, Bobby Jones, a boy from
Stonington. That was the start of a life long companionship. They were married on
April 16, 1949.
Robert (Bob) Jones was born on January 26, 1931 and departed this life on
November 6, 2024 at the age of 93 years and 10 months at the Long-Term Care
Center in Johnson, Kansas. Bob was the third child of S. Clarence Jones and Lena
(Troutman) Jones. He was born on the family homestead west of Elkhart, Kansas.
Bob was born during the dust bowl days and always remembered Black Sunday
which was in April 1935. Many children died of dust pneumonia during that time.
Bob suffered from asthma and as a result his parents decided to leave the area.
Clarence & Lena sold the homestead and relocated to Ottawa, Kansas in 1936.
After World War II and at the encouragement of Lena's sister, Gerty, they returned
to Baca County in 1945. They initially moved onto the Pritchard Ranch (Silver
Dollar) and then to the homestead of Lynn and Gerty Thompson, north of
Stonington in 1946. Bob attended high school and graduated from Stonington in
1949. It was during this time that he met the Froman boys' sister Mamie Nell and
the relationship resulted in their marriage of 71 years.
Shortly after they were married, Bob enlisted in the Air Force Reserves in June of
1949. He completed basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio,
Texas. Bob was honorably discharged on February 23, 1953. On September 13,
1950, the first of their two children were born, Connie Ann. Their second child,
Clarence, was born on January 13, 1954. In 1957 Bob, Mamie Nell and family
moved to the farm that Bob's dad had lived and farmed north of Stonington. There
they lived and grew wheat, milo, broomcorn and feed. Broomcorn harvest was
extremely hard and exhausting for Bob & Nell. Bob would manage the johnnies
(as they were called) and Nell cooked three meals a day for up to 40 harvesters.
Since the cafeteria (cookhouse as we called it) would only seat 22, they had to eat
in two shifts. Needless to say, Connie and Clarence always thought the parents
seemed a slight bit testy during broomcorn harvest. In 1972 Bob & Nell decided to
move to Walsh. They purchased their home on Ohio Street and never stopped
working and upgrading it.
After moving to town, Bob worked several years as the parts manager for John
Deere and eventually started hauling fuel for Walsh Propane. He did this for the
next 27 years. Nell worked at the Walsh Variety Store and City Market for several
years and eventually wound up cooking again for the Walsh School cafeteria. She
was remembered by all for her wonderful meals and her insistence on making sure
everyone had all they could eat. After retirement Bob would spend most of his free
time helping his son, Clarence, farm and helping Mamie Nell maintain their home
and yard.
Bob and Mamie Nell and children, Clarence & Connie, were all baptized on April
14, 1957 at the Walsh Methodist
Church in Walsh, Colorado.
Bob and Mamie Nell are preceded in death by their parents Clarence & Lena Jones
and Eldon & Edna Froman. Brothers and sisters Maxine & husband Ray
Williamson, Geraldine Haley, Faye Mills, Bob and wife Loretta Froman, Bill and
wife Susan Froman and granddaughter Cassie (Freed) Brooks.
They are survived by their children, Connie & Husband Terry Freed, Clarence &
wife Denise Jones, eight grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren, as well as
numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and other family and a host of friends.
On behalf of the family, we would like to thank everyone for their generosity and
attending this service today.
