Robert Lahar. Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Legends Tri County Funeral Home on Mar. 19, 2024.
Sgt. Robert "Rob" Michael Lahar II, 47, was born in Flint, Michigan, on September 17,1976, to Robert Lahar I and Ruth Mary Lahar. He was called home on March 14, 2024, at his home in Maxwell, Texas.
Although born in Flint, Rob moved to Croswell, Michigan in his early years. It was in Croswell that he discovered his love for horses and bull riding. He loved being outdoors and often said working with the animals was like therapy for his soul. If you have ever been to his home it wasn't out of the ordinary to be greeted by a horse or donkey on the front porch! He enjoyed being outdoors, fishing and working with his hands. He felt that he was measured by what he could do for others, and he lived by that motto because he gave even when he didn't have.
Rob was a patriot, so after graduating high school he enlisted in the United States Marine Corp in March of 1996. Sgt. Lahar was first assigned to US Peterson AFB in Colorado Springs, Colorado. In 1999, he was promoted to Sergeant and shortly after was sent to the Cheyenne Mountain Operation Center at NORAD for Operation Noble Eagle due to the 9/11 attacks. Sgt. Lahar was also a Tactical Air Defense Controller and participated in Operation Enduring Freedom in Kuwait and Baghdad. He was honorably discharged in November of 2003 with his last station being the Marine Air Control Station 23 (MACS-23) at Buckley AFB in Colorado.
Amongst being a Marine, he was also a Mama's boy. He often told stories about his mother to anyone who would listen. He was fond of drinking Faygo drinks, eating Koegels hotdogs, playing his guitar and listening to Chris LeDoux. If you met Rob, it was very evident that he was a huge University of Michigan and Red Wings fan. If he wasn't wearing a fire department hat, he was wearing his University of Michigan hat proudly, without shame, when everyone else was wearing teams from Texas! He had a love for all things Harry Potter. Ravenclaws were valued for their intelligence, wit, creativity, originality, individuality, and acceptance so it was only fitting that the sorting hat placed him in Ravenclaw. More than anything listed above, he loved his kids. He was the epitome of a proud father and you rarely saw him without his kids in tow. He loved his children unconditionally, nurtured them and taught them to be good human beings.
Rob embodied every sense of the word "altruism". He constantly gave to others without expectation of getting anything in return. He showed unselfish concern for others and spent many hours serving his community with pride as a Senior Firefighter for the Maxwell Community Volunteer Fire Department. He joined in 2016 and quickly became a mentor to many providing guidance and becoming a father figure amongst their fire family. He was an excellent firefighter who saw potential in people that others couldn't see. He loved serving his community and helping anyone he could.
He is preceded in death by his father, Robert Lahar I. His grandparents George and Irene Lahar. Sisters, Angela Lahar, Judith Crowder, and Lucille Nassar. His God parents, Dorothy Lahar, and George Lahar III.
He is survived by his son, Robert "Trip" Lahar III. Daughters, Kiara Ward and Ziva Lahar. Mother, Ruth Mary Lahar. Sisters, Helen Grumley (Jon)and Rebecca Smith (Stuart). A host of nieces and nephews including his nephew and best friend, Souhil "Sou Sou" Nassar and Mili Juarez. He is also survived by the mother of his children, Geraldine and the Evangelista Family.
Robert will be receiving his last salute Marine Corp Honors at Fort Sam Houston Committal Shelter 5 located at 1520 Harry Wurzbach Road, San Antonio, Texas, 78209 On Thursday, March 21, 2024 at 0945 am. All are welcome to attend.
The Maxwell Community Volunteer Fire Department will also be holding a memorial fire service on Friday, March 22, 2024 at 530 pm at the Fire Department located at 9655 TX-142, Maxwell, Texas, 78640. The community, family, friends, and first responders are welcome to attend.
The family will have a service in Michigan, as well, for those unable to attend Texas Services with a date and time to be determined on a later date.
