Smith Mortuary - Derby ChapelRobert Lane, 83, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend went to his eternal rest on Wednesday, September 24, 2025.Robert was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Harold Bert Lane and Anna Catherine (Butler) Lane. He married Mary (Kirchhoffer) Merriman of Vincentown, New Jersey on February 17,1965 in Durant, Oklahoma. Robert worked hard to provide for his wife and the family they created and loved, usually working two jobs, even while obtaining his bachelor’s degree from Wichita State University. He was concerned about their well-being and if they had what they needed until his dying day.
Robert enjoyed simple things: time with family, a well cooked meal, fires in the fireplace, sudoku, fishing, a game of chess or 500 Rummy, the beauty of a tall masted ship, good music, and was a die hard Dallas Cowboys fan, though he made room in his heart to have the Kansas City Chiefs be his AFC team.
He was preceded in death by his parents Harold and Anna Lane, sister Sally (Lane) Curtin, wife Mary, and son Bobby.
He is survived by his children Terri Lane, Veronica Willoughby (James), daughter-in-law Teresa Lane, grandchildren Jason Lane (Staci), Bryan Lane, Xander Willoughby, Zachary Willoughby, and great-grandson Jaxen Lane.
Friends and family are invited to gather at Smith Family Mortuary from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM on Saturday, October 11, 2025, to remember him with the family. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Alzheimer’s Association, 535 W. Douglas Ave., Suite 150, Wichita, KS. 67213.
