Robert Bob Henry Laning, born in
Cleveland, Ohio, passed away peacefully on February 17, 2026. He was the cherished son of the late Alfred and Helen Laning.
A proud graduate of the University of Akron, Bob earned his Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering, followed by a Masters in Engineering Administration from George Washington University. His professional journey was deeply intertwined with service to his country. Bobs 37-year tenure was defined by his steadfast commitment and reliability as part of the National Security Agency.
Bob was a devoted member of St. Alban's Episcopal Church, where he took on the responsibility of Junior Warden, diligently caring for the facilities and fostering a sense of community. His love for music was evident in his participation as a tenor in the church choir for more than 40 years, where his voice became a cherished part of the congregation's worship.
Beyond his professional and spiritual commitments, Bob had a zest for life that was reflected in his many hobbies and interests. He enjoyed oil painting and had a profound love for the water with boating and water skiing being favorite pastimes. A true craftsman, he found great satisfaction in fixing things, always willing to lend a hand to family and friends.
As a father, he was actively involved in his children's lives, participating in school activities with unwavering support. Whether coaching basketball, umpiring Greater Glen Burnie baseball games, camping with the Girl Scouts, or volunteering for OMHS Band Boosters, Bob was always there, cheering them on and helping them grow.
In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by his devoted wife of 52 years, Susan Patricia Laning.
Bob is survived by his loving children, James Laning (Katie), Jennifer Grismore (Carl) and Stephanie King; and his cherished grandchildren, Kristiana Laning, Timothy TJ Laning, Braeden King, Kiernan King, Sean Grismore (Antonio) and Kayla Zundel (Jace). He will also be missed by his great-grandson, Danny Zundel; sister, Ruth Eaken; dear sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, Elizabeth Gillette, June Hencke (Tom), and Mark Lynch (Judy French); and many beloved nieces and nephews.
