Rob was a good friend and person. He had a great sense of humor and you could count on him being there for you. He will be missed by all who knew him.

To the LaVerghetta family,
My sincere condolences in your unforeseen loss of Rob. I was fortunate to have worked with him during his tenure at Space Telescope. He truly was a gifted human in so many ways. If one understood his humour, he was hilarious. Truly a well-meaning, exceptionally intelligent soul, who was mightily proud and dedicated to his profession. I am grateful for the opportunity to have known him. His passing saddened me greatly, but even more so as he was unable to see JWST through to launch. His passion for the mission was thoroughly evident. Although no longer at ST, it was a treat seeing him here for exercises; Facebook enabled continued connection. It's my hope that you may find some peace in knowing Rob will be tremendously missed.
Sincerely,
Susan Mucklow

I worked with Rob for a handful of years at STScI, either as a coworker, or understudy. We had our ups and downs, but in the end he always called on me as his confidant. He championed for me as well, which i will always appreciate. The work he put in for me, being so early in my career, will have compounding future impacts. I will be forever grateful.
For those of you that worked alongside him in the MOC, you know he always made shifts more .... interesting. For me, during slow times, he helped strengthen my star trek knowledge considerably. And when we were scheduled on console together, he was Captain Picard, and I was #1.
Rob, I hope you're exploring new worlds and seeking out civilizations up there. Rest In Peace Captain.

Rob,
Well I don’t have the personal history with you that many others do, I can say with confidence that you were an integral part of our JWST family. Your dedication and commitment are an important part of what this Ariane-5 rocket is about to launch into space. You made a difference!
Rest easy and Rest In Peace.

Rob was a key figure in my life at an important age - we were friends with shared interests, sure, but more than that he was a model for how to start making your own way in the world. Sincere condolences to all his friends and family.
