In his earlier days, Bob was a standout athlete at Matignon High School during the tail end of the1950's. Here he excelled in both Football and Basketball. Co-Captain for both sports, his senior year is where he led his teams to Championship tournaments that would later be acknowledged by the Hall of Fame committee as some of the greatest teams in all Matignon sports history. Here Bob solidified his legacy as a skillful athlete by being inducted into the Matignon Hall of Fame for both his football and basketball achievements. Recognized for his many accomplishments, Bob's great success came when he achieved the impressive milestone of scoring over 1,000 points in basketball. His name was so proudly displayed on the 1,000-point tapestry that hung from the rafters within the gym. A lasting tribute to both his talent and dedication to the sport that he loved. After graduating in 1960, Bob's passion for basketball allowed him to continue his talents with a spot on the Boston College basketball team where he played for the legendary Hall of Famer Bob Cousey. His achievements as a college athlete were a testament to his hard work, perseverance, and passion for the game. He took great pleasure and pride in wearing his most cherished possession, of which was his Boston College ring. To him this symbolized all that he worked so hard for. After Bob's college career his love for the game continued by becoming an NCAA Division I college referee. Here he became a respected figure on the court by all his peers, collegiate athletes and coaches throughout the country. This journey continued for 34 years before he finally hung up the striped shirt to retire. Bob's professional career was that of being the Chief Probation officer at the Natick court. Here he was not only deeply respected for his unwavering commitment to justice but for the compassion he showed for those that he supervised. He had the ability to balance firmness with empathy, earning trust from both the court system and the community. His dedication went beyond duty; he believed in second chances and worked tirelessly to help others rebuild their lives. That kind of respect wasn't given-it's earned, and he earned it every single day. This respect was evident when just the other day the Woburn Courthouse lowered their flags to half-mast to honor his extraordinary contributions to his profession.
Bob's life story wouldn't be complete without mentioning the profound love he captured when he met his beautiful Sweet Georgia. Their connection was immediate and deep, marking the beginning of a beautiful journey together. Their love story was one of mutual respect, support, and unwavering affection, and they shared countless cherished moments throughout their life together. He filled Georgia's world with unconditional love and happiness. A love that was limitless and never challenged. Their marriage, beloved by heaven, was a testament to their deep and abiding love for each other, creating a legacy of devotion and harmony that will be remembered and loved by all who knew them.
Bob was blessed by having two daughters, Michele and Colleen. He cherished his role as a father and took great pride in their accomplishments and the wonderful people they grew up to be. His love and dedication to his family were evident in everything he did, and his daughters were a constant source of joy and pride in his life. With warm and loving hugs, he had given Daddy's little girls a safeguard from a world of uncertainty. He stood in the background with pride while he watched his daughters flourish into the beautiful woman and loving mothers that they had become.
Twenty-three years ago, Bob was introduced to one of god's little angels his grandson Gianni. An unbreakable bond of love and affection was created when Poppi was able to hold him for the very first time. That moment for Poppi was filled with overwhelming joy and happiness for such a wonderful blessing. As time passed, Poppi became Gianni's biggest fan when attending his High School and College basketball games. He had a shared love with his grandson for the game that he once held close to his heart. His love for a grandson didn't stop there. Caiden, his second grandchild, entered his life with such an infectious smile that just simply melted Poppi's heart. Poppi embraced every opportunity to share his love and affection for Caiden. Their memories of Poppi taking him out on his boat will be a cherished connection that they will share always.
As a father-in-law, he accepted both Ralph and Jeff into his heart. This mutual respect has become a deepened bond that they will hold close to their hearts. He so graciously extended his love each day so that they would always know that they belonged.
Bob's handshake with his friends was genuine and true. He asked nothing from their friendships, yet he contributed everything. The love he shared with his friends mirrored that of his family and for that mutual bond he was most deservingly respected.
Bob will be sadly missed by all. We are all so lucky to have had Bob Madigan, Dad, and Poppi to be part of our lives. We can take solace in knowing that he is now embracing his beloved bride for all of eternity. We love you Dad with all our hearts!
Relatives and friends are invited to a visitation at the Keefe Funeral Home, 5 Chestnut St., ARLINGTON on Tuesday August 26th from 4-7 pm. Burial is private.
