In Loving Memory of Robert Marshall
October 4, 1927 – July 7, 2025
It is with deep love and sadness that we announce the passing of Robert Marshall, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend. He passed away leaving behind a legacy of kindness, dedication, and service.
Born on October 4, 1927, in Fair Lawn, NJ, to Andrew and Bertha, Robert moved to Ridgewood at the age of 7, where he would spend the rest of his life. He graduated from Ridgewood High School and went on to study at Fairleigh Dickinson and the Newark College of Engineering.
A proud veteran, Robert served in World War II as a member of the Army Air Corps. Upon returning home he became an exempt Volunteer Fireman and dedicated his career to public service. Employed by the Village of Ridgewood for 33 years, he served as Village Engineer and became the very first Director of Public Works. He was a member of the NJ Society of Municipal Engineers and was respected for his unwavering commitment to his community.
He married the love of his life, Eleanor Hollingshead, and together they were blessed with 4 children: Nancy (Mark) Schwind, Carole (Albert) Di Maso, Robert (Joy) Marshall Jr., and Mary Marshall,
8 grandchildren: Megan (William) Hannis, Thomas (Stefanie) Schwind, Jeffrey (Jillian) Schwind, Lisa (Jeffrey) Patch, James (Chandy) Di Maso, Kristina (Kyle) Clark, Michelle (Brandon) Hull, and Robert E. Marshall, and 9 great grandchildren. His family was his greatest joy, and he was a constant, loving presence in their lives.
He had a passion for learning and working with his hands, with wide -ranging interests in the trades-including carpentry, plumbing, and electrical work. He collected coins and just about everything else, always curious and engaged in life. He and Eleanor loved traveling around the United States and created countless memories together on their adventures.
One of his favorite places was his vacation home in Ship Bottom, NJ, which he helped build in 1951. There he enjoyed swimming in the ocean, casting a line in the surf, and spending cherished time with family. He also found great enjoyment in simple pleasures like bowling and horseshoe pitching.
He was a dependable and generous man, always available to lend a helping hand to family and friends. His warmth, sense of humor, and quiet strength will be missed deeply by all who knew him.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Ridgewood Fire Department or to
St. Jude Children's Research Hospital-two causes close to his heart.
