Robert Maxwell Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 17, 2001.
When Robert J. Maxwell didn't come home from work at the Pentagon, his wife figured he had gotten stuck in the snarl of traffic after the building was evacuated. Then she waited for the page that wouldn't come.

The Manassas, Va., man had worked as a civilian budget analyst for the U.S. Army for 29 years. He was just a year away from retirement. He planned to play a lot of golf, do the books for wife Karen Greenberg's psychology practice and basically take care of her.

Maxwell, 54, appeared to be conservative but wasn't, his wife said. He enjoyed cooking Southwestern and Creole food, listened to Janis Joplin and Joe Cocker, and joked with a dry wit. "He had a very vast sense of humor," Greenberg said. "There was an absurdity to it."

The former Texan loved to do crossword puzzles and teased his wife of three years about being a native New Yorker.

They were opposites, she said. "But we blended. He gave me grounding, and I gave him creativity."

I am a Texan, wed to a woman who was born here, but her Mother is from New York, so I kid my mother-in-law a lot about being a Yankee! At the time of the horrible 9-11 incident, I was working for MetLife, headquartered in NYC, and that terrorist act actually drew me closer to my friends in New York. My Dad was career Army so we moved around a lot, including a stint when he worked for the Military District of Washington and we lived in Woodbridge (where I graduated from HS). I had a wonderful boss from Manassas and to this day have many friends living in that area all up and down I-95. I said all that to say, that this whole country felt united after that horrible day, and sadly with the current political arena, it seems that there is a lot of divisiveness amongst our country. I pause today to remember Robert and the others who gave their lives for this country, who served us well for many years. I pray specifically for his wife, for his family, and for his friends. May we all honor his legacy by serving our country, being good citizens, and YES, keep a great sense of humor the whole while. With much love from Texas,

I never met Mr. Maxwell; but as a friend and co-worker of Bob's son Tanner, I truly wish I had. Tanner is a great guy, and I from what I hear the apple didn't fall far from the tree. "Tan-man", if I can ever help in any way just let me know.

This is for Robert's son Tanner. We wish you the best and know that through this tragedy, you will find peace in your heart. Remember that we all care about you millions (O'Tooles crew), and that we wish you everything you could ever want. We understand that out of this tradgedy of losing your father, you had to endure even more. We know that you can make it and love you very much. You are very special and never, ever forget that.

Karen, I really miss Bob. We worked together about 19 years. We had some good and bad times. I saw Bob in Mike's office before I left the office on 9/11. Karen I'm here if you need me.

Dear Karen:

I send you condolences on the loss of your husband.

Before Christmas I received his name on a bracelet which I wear everyday, to remind me to pray for you in your time of grief. I will be wearing the bracelet every day until Oct. 11, 2002 and I will be praying for you, several times every day.

Through the internet, I read about your husband and he sounds like a great guy.

Currently, I host a talk radio program (4 hours every evening from 4 to 8 here in Los Angeles) but back in my younger days, I was "Cousin Duffy", one of the GOOD GUYS from WPGC. Not only did I play Janis Joplin and Joe Cocker records on the air, but I also MC-ed their concerts in Washington back in the 60s. So, perhaps our paths crossed back there in those crazy days of our youth.

If there is anything you need, any way I can help you or specifically pray for you, please let me know.

And know there are many of us, who share your loss and your grief.

Your new friend in California.

We are very sorry for your loss of Robert. May his sense of humor, his life and love live on in you. May warm memories of times together lighten the sorrow in your hearts. Our hearts cry with you.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn

Dear Maxwell Family;

I also have a Mercy BAND inscribed with Robert's name.

I promise to pray daily for him in heaven and for the grieving family he has left here on Earth.

I know that this holiday season will be quite difficult for you, and I hope that the knowledge that someone is praying and thinking about him and you all helps a small bit.

May God Bless you all.
