Robert McCain Obituary

Robert Lee McCain
07/14/1936 - 09/07/2025
Our beloved Robert Lee McCain, 89, a lifelong Houstonian, passed away on September 7, 2025. Born in the East End home built by his uncle and grandfather. He was raised by his grandmother Jewel Cropper and Uncle Luke.
Known for his impeccable integrity, quick wit, and encyclopedic intellect, Robert was always there for his loved ones and never without a joke. His devotion to Christ and his community was matched only by his deep adoration for Baylor University-especially Baylor football. A lifelong church member, servant of Christ, and dedicated Rotarian, Robert lived as a true humanitarian.
Robert's greatest blessing in life was meeting Norma Jane at church when they were children. What began as childhood friendship blossomed into a love story that would last a lifetime. Robert and Jane married, built a home filled with faith, and raised two sons, Gary and Kevin. Their marriage, which spanned 68 years, was a shining example of devotion and unconditional love.
Following high school, Robert spent a brief period at West Point Military Academy before graduating from Baylor University in 1958. He later pursued studies at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and went on to earn a master's degree in Education from Sam Houston University. During his career with Houston ISD, Robert rose from substitute teacher to Assistant Superintendent of Personnel, where he established the German Teacher Exchange Program, leaving a lasting legacy in education. The result of Robert's dedication brought him a remarkable honor: in 1987, he received a personal invitation from the Mayor of Berlin to attend President Ronald Reagan's historic "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall" speech. Robert also had a passion for history and genealogy, and was a member of Sons of the American Revolution (SAR).
Equally dedicated to his local community, Robert poured his time and energy into youth sports. He coached and supported both Little League and FUN Football, and proudly served as president of Willow Creek Little League, where his leadership and enthusiasm shaped the lives of countless young athletes.
Robert is survived by his beloved wife of 68 years and the love of his life, Norma Jane McCain; his sons Gary McCain (Miriam) and Kevin McCain (Mari); his granddaughters Kelli McCain Lopez (Jose), Toni Jane McCain, and Kristen McCain; three great grandchildren, and his brother Mark Pate (Leigh).
Robert's life was a testament to faith, family, and service. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, September 27, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at Willow Meadows Baptist Church.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made in Robert's name to Willow Meadows Baptist Church or Houston Hobby Area Rotary Club, continuing his legacy of service.

I know he will be sorely missed. But as a believer we know he is dancing with Jesus and is no longer in pain. And that brings with it a sense of hope and peace. I'm glad I got to meet and know him and I look forward to seeing him again someday. Love you Robert.
