Robert Donald Mills

Mr. Robert Donald “Don” Mills, 86, of Mount Airy, passed away Friday evening, May 26, 2023, at his home.  Mr. Mills was born September 18, 1936, in Surry County, one of five children born to the late Charlie Fountain and Elizabeth Nonnie Brinkley Mills.  Don was reared on a family farm in the Holly Springs community, and he spent most of his life raising tobacco.  He also enjoyed many years as a professional musician, playing the guitar for numerous groups.  Don was a member of Holly Springs Baptist Church.  He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Lucille Hiatt Mills; two sons, Donnie Mills and Laura Goings and Mitch Mills; a niece, Ronda Mills Odell; four nephews, Mike Mills, Frank Mills, Frank Parries, and Sammy Childress; and a brother-in-law, Larry Gilbert Hiatt.  In addition to his parents, Mr. Mills was preceded in death by three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Genevieve and Bill Johnson, Ola Mae Matthews, and June and Clinton Childress; and a brother and sister-in-law, John and Barbara Mills.  The funeral service will be held Tuesday, May 30, 2023, at 11:00 AM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with the Rev. Richard Loman and Frank Parries officiating.  Burial will follow in the Holly Springs Baptist Church Cemetery.  The family will receive friends Tuesday from 9:30 until 11:00 AM at the funeral home.  In lieu of food and flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Holly Springs Baptist Church, 374 Holly Springs Road, Mount Airy, NC  27030.
