ROBERT MULDOON Obituary

MULDOON, Robert J. Jr. Of Arlington, joined the majority on July 4, 2022. Known to all as Bob, and to a few as Boston Papa, he was predeceased by his parents, Robert J. Muldoon, Sr., and Catherine E. Hurley Muldoon. He was the husband of 49 years of Barbara J. Mooney Muldoon, who passed away in 2017. A son of Somerville, Bob attended St. Clement's School and then BC High ('54). He joined the novitiate class of the Society of Jesus at Shadowbrook in Lenox, MA immediately after high school. Upon leaving the Society, Bob attended BC Law, thus becoming the rarest of birds, a quadruple Eagle (counting degrees conferred by BC while he was in the seminary). Bob clerked for the Hon. Paul G. Kirk at the SJC of Massachusetts before embarking on his career at Withington, Cross, Park & Grodin. Among many notable cases, Bob and his great friend Rudy Kass successfully represented the residents of Arlington against the MA Department of Public Works to prevent Spy Pond being filled in to expand Route 2. In 1982, Bob moved to Sherin & Lodgen, LLP where he spent the rest of his long career. He established a reputation for maintaining the highest professional standards and for being the most collegial (Judge Kass always said "most theatrical") lawyer in Boston. Bob was a member of the Massachusetts Board of Bar Examiners and was elected to the American College of Trial Lawyers. He became a member of the Tavern Club and the Curtis Club, and received mixed reviews for his performances as a Bear and later, a Redcoat, in their amateur theatricals. Bob was devoted to Catholic-Jewish relations and was awarded the Judge Learned Hand Award by the American Jewish Committee; to crown his career, he received the Massachusetts Bar Association's Gold Medal Award in 2017, which he dedicated to our mom. Bob was a devoted brother to his siblings, James, Mary, and John Muldoon; and a huge fan of his son-in-law Tom Lawton. He was an uncle and great-uncle many times over and was a mentor to a great many members of the legal community. "It's a poor heart that never rejoices!" Bob declared whenever an opportunity for indulgence occurred, and all three of us (and Tom!) say it to this day. Bob Muldoon's heart was anything but poor; we rejoice and are grateful to have loved him and to have learned from his example. Visitation will be held at Keefe Funeral Home in ARLINGTON on Friday, July 8 from 4-8 pm. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Eulalia Church, Winchester, on Saturday, July 9 at 10 am. In lieu of flowers, we would be most grateful for gifts to BC High, designating the scholarship established in Bob's parents' names (Robert J. and Catherine E. Muldoon Fund, #7067), c/o the Office for Institutional Advancement, Boston College High School, 150 Morrissey Blvd., Boston, MA 02125 or to the MA/NH Alzheimer's Association, 309 Waverley Oaks Road, Waltham, MA 02452.

I just learned of Bob's passing. I met and worked with Bob 20+ years ago, while I was working for Volvo, and kindled a friendship with him and Fr. Manning, his friend and my mentor from Holy Cross. Bob was a great lawyer and an even nicer person. I am sorry to learn that he has passed on - my condolences to his family.

My condolences to Bob's family. We used to work out at the same health club in Boston and would often discuss the history of the Boston legal community (of which Bob had an encyclopedic knowledge). He was a fine lawyer with a great sense of humor. God Bless.

I did not know Bob Muldoon personally, but I've admired him for well over 30 years. Back when I was a new associate at a large Boston law firm, we represented a client in litigation involving a real estate development in downtown Boston. Attorney Muldoon represented the other party. As an effort to move us towards settlement without a full trial, the court offered the option of a three-day mock trial to see how a jury would respond to each side's evidence, arguments and testimony. I attended the first day as an observer.
Our side showed up with a partner and several associates lugging redwells full of papers.
On the other side: Bob Muldoon with a legal pad and a pen.
I don't remember the ultimate result, but I admired Attorney Muldoon's stripped-down approach to litigation in contrast to our firm's bloated staffing.

To all the Muldoon family, sincere condolences to all. I remember Bob well, as all my Kirk family does, with affection and respect. Bob was a great clerk for my father. They enjoyed each other's company both professionally and personally. May he rest in Peace.

We both have such fond memories of Bob and will miss his wisdom and humor. In addition to being a remarkable lawyer, he was just such a wonderful human being.
