I miss my dad.
I found this page looking for his date of birth, and it was such a surprise to read a memory of his time at Motorola. He didn't have a college degree, so I'm sure he understood how difficult it was to navigate the system. Dad had an innate understanding of technology, from building his first crystal radio set as a kid through every new innovation. He fixed our cars, tvs and everything else that broke. He loved projects and always had a tool bench and machines. He loved the part his work played in Motorola's projects related to space exploration. I remember that he would sit us in front of the tv to watch every launch trying to impress on us how important it was.
He immediately understood how computers would change the world, suggesting I learn that instead of architecture. I thought he was nuts at the time, boy was I wrong. He loved Apple computers and his last one was the Ipad. When he was unable to move around he could travel through Google Earth, National Geographic. TED talks and Arizona Highways He was a lifelong photographer and loved being in nature whether it was fishing, hiking or taking pictures. I remember many family trips to national parks, water skiing behind our little boat in Arizona, and flying with him in his Cessna 172.
He was a good son to his mother, Lillian, father to me, friend, and grandfather to my boys who seem to be following in his footsteps. I am so glad I spent the time with him that I did later in his life, and only wish there had been more moments.
