Robert Wayne Pryor, born on November 13, 1935, in Waco, TX, passed away on September 3, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of love, warmth, and cherished memories. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, known for his vibrant spirit and genuine nature. Robert was the eighth of nine children born to Julius Earl and Carolyn Ferguson Pryor and raised in Waco. He is survived by his youngest brother, Roger Pryor.
Robert is survived by his beloved wife of 68 years, Anita (Carpenter) Pryor, with whom he shared a deep and abiding love that was evident to all who knew them. Their bond was a beautiful example of partnership and devotion. He is also survived by their children, daughter Tamarah Polk and husband Donnie as well as son Michael Pryor and wife Melissa who carry on his legacy of kindness and strength.
His family grew to include five grandchildren: Rachel (Marcus) Conch, Kyle (Chelsy) Pryor, Devin (Shannon Herod) Barton, Alyson (Scott) Watts, and Jared Pryor, as well as eight great-grandchildren who brought him immense joy and pride. Robert cherished every moment spent with them and loved being called “Poppa” and later “Big Poppa”. He was always ready with a story, a smile, or a helping hand.
A man of many passions, Robert had an incredible ability to talk to anyone, anywhere, about anything. His friendly demeanor and engaging personality made him a beloved figure. Whether he was chatting with neighbors or making new friends, he had a unique ability to connect with people from all walks of life. His warmth and humor endeared him to everyone he came in contact with.
The bonds he made with classmates from South Junior and Waco Tech class of 1955 remained strong and deep throughout his adult life. Great friendships were also developed during his work career. “Quickchange42” was well known member of the Central Freight trucking team. Dirt track auto racing for Robert was a family affair and a great passion of his. His pit crew racing team included his brother, brother-in-law, son, and his father-in-law who raced his own car against him in friendly competition. The grandstands contained a large following of family members there to support and cheer on #42 to victory. He was a respected driver at many tracks in Texas from Greenville to Crandall to Elm Mott to Navasota just to name a few. Robert is a member of the Wall of Fame at the Heart of Texas Speedway in Elm Mott, Texas.
Robert enjoyed the outdoors and found pleasure in spending time there with his mules and horses. Trail rides were an enjoyable pastime and great friends were made there as well.
Robert's memory will live on in the hearts of his family and friends, who will forever remember his love, laughter, and the countless ways he touched their lives. He will be deeply missed but will always be remembered with love and admiration. Visitation will be held at Pecan Grove Funeral Home, 3124 Robinson Dr. on Friday, September 6, 2024, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 pm. On Saturday, September 7, 2024 at 9:30 a.m., funeral services will be held at Pecan Grove Funeral Home followed by burial at Waco Memorial Park Mausoleum, 6623 Interstate 35 S, Robinson, TX 76706.
