Robert Anthony "Tony" Rodgers, age 70, passed away on June 27, 2025, in
San Diego, California. Born on December 10, 1954, in Springfield, Ohio, Tony lived a life marked by deep loyalty, vibrant friendships, and a joyful embrace of the things he loved most.
Tony was the devoted son of the late Robert and Marjorie (née Bramble) Rodgers. He grew up in Fort Wayne, Indiana, where he attended North Side High School before continuing his education at Indiana University and Purdue University Fort Wayne. Later, he pursued further studies at San Diego Community College after relocating to California.
Professionally, Tony built a respected career as an accountant. He retired from the Research Department at Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation in San Diego, where his dedication and work ethic left a lasting impression.
Tony is survived by his loving family: his brother Timothy (Cammy) Rodgers of Fort Wayne, Indiana; his sister Jennifer (the late Ted) Rodgers Johnson of Fort Wayne; and his brother-in-law Dale (the late Lynne) Iwataki. He was a cherished uncle to Ann Michelle (Chad) Gargrave of Woodridge, Illinois; Miranda "Mindy" (Erik) Barfuss of Naperville; Paula (Ryan) of Fort Wayne; Tony "TJ" (Stephanie) Rodgers of Fort Wayne; Robert (Meghan) Iwataki of Winfield, Illinois; Ted (Beth) Johnson of Fort Wayne; and Robert Johnson of Fort Wayne. Tony held a special place in his heart for each of them and often spoke fondly of his visits back home filled with laughter and connection.
Tony also shared a deep bond with his chosen family in San Diego. His close friends William Grimes and beloved dog Lily, Annette Pacatte, Gloria and Rose Nappi, and Brenda Veilleux were constants in his life. Their companionship brought him joy and comfort throughout the years.
A man of many interests and talents, Tony had an early passion for woodworking and furniture refinishing. His love for science fiction and fantasy was evident in his extensive collection of Star Trek memorabilia, Harry Potter books, and Agatha Christie novels. He was an avid traveler who explored both domestic destinations and international landmarks-among them Ireland, the United Kingdom, and Paris's Musée d'Orsay in 2019.
Tony's zest for life extended into the cultural fabric of San Diego. He was a dedicated member of the San Diego Zoo and regularly attended concerts at The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park, Balboa Park Organ Pavilion, and Old Trolley Barn Park. A fan of live theater, he frequented Broadway San Diego performances at the Civic Center. His commitment to community was also seen through his enthusiastic participation in Pride Festivals in both San Diego and San Francisco.
Each year on his birthday, Tony celebrated with friends at Bully's East Restaurant-his favorite steakhouse-creating cherished memories that will live on in the hearts of those who joined him.
Known for his intelligence, charisma, and infectious smile, Tony was a loyal friend who gave generously of himself. He volunteered when needed most and brought warmth to every gathering with his culinary talents-his baked beans, scrappy beef, and coleslaw were legendary among those lucky enough to share a meal with him. His love extended to animals as well; he was always ready to care for pets within the family circle.
Tony was predeceased by Lynne A. Iwataki and Mary Alycia Markey.
His memory will continue to inspire those who knew him-with every shared story around a dinner table or walk through Balboa Park. May his legacy bring comfort to all who loved him.
