He was confirmed and baptized at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Litchfield. The family later bought a farm near Manannah where they milked cows, farmed the land, and Bob grew to manhood. He graduated from Litchfield High School and enlisted in the National Guard Army in 1951. He was sent to Camp Rucker in Alabama for training and was later deployed to Korea to fight in the war where he advanced to the rank of Sergeant. In August 1952 Bob was injured during front line action when a hand grenade exploded near his legs. He was sent to an Army Hospital in Osaka, Japan where he spent several months recovering. After he received an honorable discharge, he returned to his family farm to help his father and also worked in construction. He was united in marriage to Betty Melstrom on August 2, 1958 in Ellsworth, Wisconsin. Bob and Betty bought a farm near Forest City where he raised hogs and worked the land. Bob also drove school bus and was a custodian for the National Guard Armory in Litchfield where he worked for 30 years before retiring in 1990. Bob and Betty raised their five children on this farm near Forest City. After Betty’s death in 1979, Bob married Virgie Schultz, who passed away in 1983. He later married Diane Grussendorf, who passed away in 2024. He was a member of Ostmark Lutheran Church and enjoyed hunting, fishing, skiing, going to the casino, and visiting friends and relatives.
