Robert Rowland Obituary
Obituary published on Legacy.com by O'ahu Mortuary on Dec. 24, 2025.
Robert Rowland, born on August 14, 1946, in Honolulu, Hawai'i, passed away peacefully on November 20, 2025, in the place he always called home.
As a teenager, Robert moved from Hawai'i to Washington State with his parents, George and Alfrieda Rowland, his brother Justin Rowland, and his beloved grandparents, his Tutu Helen Mawae Kapahu Thielsen and "BumBum" Karl Thielsen. Tutu was Robert's favorite, and he was hers, a bond that shaped him deeply and remained close to his heart throughout his life. During those years, he formed lifelong friendships, including a close bond with his drummer friend Doug, who remained dear to him throughout his life.
In adulthood, Robert returned to Hawai'i with a clear intention to build his life where his heart belonged. He often shared, with pride and humor, his hope of finding and marrying a Hawaiian woman. Hawai'i was not just home to him. It was part of who he was.
Robert built a meaningful life in Honolulu, working at several hotels throughout Waikiki, including the world renowned Halekulani Hotel. He became well known in the restaurant and banquet industry for his impeccable old school service, genuine warmth, and natural charm. Guests and coworkers alike consistently praised his professionalism and kindness.
Family meant everything to Robert. He cherished visits with his nieces Heather and Angela on Kaua'i and treasured time spent with his grandnieces Shanice and Brandee. Later, he enjoyed time with his other grandnieces, Vanessa on Kaua'i, and Angelia and Anabella in California, and was especially blessed to see them during visits to O'ahu shortly before his passing.
Robert also shared a special bond with his extended family in Washington, including his niece Dominique, with whom he spoke monthly, his nephew Justin, and Justin's children, Bentley, Callie, Autumn, and Miles, whom he loved deeply. A family trip to O'ahu created lasting memories they all held close.
He fondly remembered the time he spent with his cousin Lynda at powwows in Virginia, moments that brought him great joy and pride and that he spoke of often.
Robert shared a decades long friendship with Paul and Paul's wife, Yasue. They celebrated every holiday together, and Robert proudly stood as Paul's best man at his wedding, a true testament to the depth of their bond and the love he inspired.
Robert is survived by many other family members including his great grandniece Aubrey, who shared the same favorite color blue.
Known for his charm, loyalty, and fierce protectiveness, Robert carried a heart full of compassion. He had a rare gift for making people feel seen, valued, and enough just as they were.
Uncle Robert will be remembered for his big heart, quiet strength, and the love he shared so freely.
Rest in love, Uncle Robert.
