Robert T. Schmitt Jr.

Robert T. Schmitt, 84, formerly of Fairfield, New Jersey and most recently of Freehold, New Jersey, passed away peacefully on March 7, 2026.

Born in Newark, New Jersey, to the late Robert T Schmitt Sr. and Dorothy Schmitt, nee Wilson. Robert spent many years living in Fairfield before settling in Freehold. A dedicated and hardworking man, he was the proud owner of his own HVAC business and was known for his strong work ethic and commitment to providing for his family.

Robert was a long-time member of the Elks Club, where he enjoyed the camaraderie and friendships he built over the years.

Above all, Robert was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather who took great pride in his family.

He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Janice Schmitt nee Melillo; his son, Robert III; and his daughter, MaryAnne. He was a proud grandfather to Christopher, Jessica, Michael, Olivia, Nicholas, Julia, Hollis, Giana, and Isabella; proud great grandfather to Avellina; and a loving brother to his sister Judith Keegan.

He was predeceased by his beloved daughter, Suzanne and his brother Gerald.

Robert will be remembered for his dedication to his family, his hardworking spirit, and the lasting impact he made on those who knew and loved him.

Relatives and friends may visit on Saturday March 14th, from 3-5 pm at the Higgins Memorial Home, 20 Center Street, Freehold.
