Just learned of Mr. Schwerdt's passing today, July 4, 2019. He was Chairman of the English Department when I began teaching at Highland High School in 1969. He was everything a new teacher could hope for in a department head. He was kind, understanding, and helpful. I could see right away why so many students liked and respected him.
It has been a near lifetime since those first days at Highland High, but my respect for him has never wavered.
Thanks from those of us you helped become better teachers--- students... human beings.
Thanks for being you.

Mr. Schwerdt was a great teacher and a good influence on countless students over a long career. I was one of them. Joe Canino class of 1964 HHS.

Mr Schwerdt was an amazing teacher! And when I was at HHS, also directed the plays. And his memory of former student was phenomenal. He even remembered something I wrote in 1957 at a recent reunion.

I loved talking to him as I passed his house on my daily walks. He was a warm and gentle man, and I shall miss him.

Mr Schwerdt was my favorite teacher my Senior year at HHS. He was my drama teacher and left a lifelong impression. Reading his obituary, I only wish I knew back then about his service to our country. It just reinforced the respect I had for him then and now. To this day my children know that he was the teacher that had the most influence on me as a student. My deepest sympathy to his family.

One of my favorite teachers at HHS. Mr. Schwerdt was tough, but fair and probably influenced the lives of his students more than many realized. Your light in this world will be greatly missed.

Loved Mr. Schwerdt. Took him for three classes my senior year. His quirky, tough way of teaching worked for me and led to my career in writing, first as a journalist then as a lawyer. Rest In Peace, Sir. You earned it.

A great teacher who significantly impacted my life and created a love for literature , writing and learning . I always enjoyed talking with him at class reunions . I would always thank him for helping to prepare me for a successful life in the business world and for changing my life's interests .
