Robert Broaddus Singleton—known to all as Beau—passed away peacefully on April 7, 2025, surrounded by his loving family, after bravely facing several health challenges. More than a husband, father, friend, and law enforcement officer, Beau was a force of love and laughter. His legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched through his kindness, integrity, and generous spirit.

Beau was born in Petersburg, Virginia, on December 27, 1955, to Arthur L. (Pete) Singleton and Janice P. Horner, and raised in Alexandria. He attended T.C. Williams High School before earning a degree in Police Science from Northern Virginia Community College in 1979. Soon after, he met the love of his life, Judi, and they were married in 1984. Together, they built a beautiful life and were blessed with two daughters, Kaya and Katie. Of all his accomplishments, Beau most cherished being a husband and father. His love for Judi was deep and unwavering, and he poured his heart into supporting and celebrating his daughters every day.

Beau began his career in law enforcement with the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) before serving as a private investigator for several major corporations and government agencies, including the U.S. Department of the Interior, Army, and Navy. His true calling came in 1986 when he joined the United States Capitol Police (USCP), serving for more than two decades. He was instrumental in founding the USCP Mountain Bike Patrol Unit and co-authored its training manual, later adopted nationwide.

After his promotion to Detective—now recognized as Special Agent—Beau served with distinction in the Dignitary Protection Division (DPD), where he protected members of House and Senate leadership, including Majority Leader Dick Armey, House Speakers Newt Gingrich and Dennis Hastert, and Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott.

Highly respected, he received numerous commendations for his dedication and exemplary service. On September 11, 2001, he played a pivotal role in evacuating the Speaker of the House, ensuring a swift and safe departure from the Capitol during one of the nation’s darkest hours. His remarkable career took him across the country, leading security operations for Members of Congress at conventions, retreats, and major events—including Presidential Inaugurations, State of the Union Addresses, and foreign head of state visits. Many of his assignments remain classified to this day.

In retirement, Beau provided private dignitary protection and served as lead bailiff at his local courthouse for several years. He volunteered on sheriff campaigns, remained active in politics, and was a proud member of the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP).

Beau had a magnetic personality—he never met a stranger. With a coffee in hand and a mischievous smile, he lived life on his own terms. Friends and family will remember his steady presence, warm eyes often lit with laughter, constant humor, and thick silver hair. A devoted Pittsburgh Steelers fan, he was also a voracious reader and an avid collector of political memorabilia, along with police patches, badges, and challenge coins from departments across the country.

He leaves behind his loving wife of over 40 years, Judi; his daughters, Kaya and Katie; his brothers, Bruce and David; his sister, Elizabeth; and a large circle of adoring family, friends, colleagues, and fellow officers who will forever carry his memory in their hearts.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Memorial donations may be made through a dedicated link in Beau’s name benefiting the Brain Injury Rehabilitation Program at MedStar National Rehabilitation Hospital. Please see below for the link.
