Robert T. Smith Jr., 92, of Mentor, Ohio, passed away peacefully on October 17, 2025. Born June 29, 1933, in Baltimore, Maryland, Robert was the son of the late Robert T. Smith Sr. and Nora Dinan. He was the beloved husband of the late Jean Smith, with whom he shared 60 wonderful years of marriage. Robert was a devoted father to Bob Smith, Pat Smith and his wife Susan, Kim Leasure and her husband David. He was a cherished grandfather to nine grandchildren and a proud great-grandfather to seven great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his loving sister, Noreen Reid, and will be fondly remembered by many extended family members and friends. A proud veteran, Robert served honorably in the United States Navy during the Korean War. After his service, he proposed to Jean at Gun powered state park and they resided in Carney MD for 4 decades. Robert had various jobs Truck and Auto Mechanic, Maintenance, and his final job before retiring was working for Maryland Occupational Safety and Health. He started as a general safety inspector and finished as a Tower Crane and Bridge Inspector. Robert loved to climb the cranes and bridges. An avid camper and fisherman, Robert loved trips to Deep Creek Lake, Elk Neck State Park Lakewood Family Campground in Myrtle Beach, and exploring new camping spots. Robert also extended his camping with the Boy Scouts as an Assistant Scout Master and Explorer Advisor. Robert had a personality as big as his heart. He was known for his humor, warmth, and love of socializing. His favorite hangout was his garage "man cave," where he could be found cheering on his favorite baseball teams-the Baltimore Orioles and listening to country music while enjoying a cold Natty Bo, Budweiser, or PBR. After retiring, Robert moved to Lakewood Family Campground in Myrtle Beach for two decades, where he enjoyed the sunshine, fishing, and laid-back coastal life. After Myrtle Beach Robert stayed with his daughter Kim and then an apartment close to his wife Jeans assisted living facility for the next 8 years. Eventually Robert moved to Mentor Ohio with his son Robert where he enjoyed the Cleveland Guardians, various restaurants with his son and friends, and fun times with his Home Health Aides. He will be remembered for his fun-loving spirit, his dedication to family, and his knack for making people laugh.
Family and friends will honor and celebrate Bobs life at the family owned Evans life celebration home,8800 Harford Rd Parkville Maryland 21234 for a visitation on Sunday, November 9th 2025 from 2:00-4:00 pm. A funeral mass will be held on Monday November 10th, 2025,11:00 am at St. Ursula's Catholic church. Internment to follow at Holly Hill Memorial Gardens.
