Robert Smith Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Usrey Funeral Home - Pell City on Dec. 26, 2025.
Robert Lee Smith, 83, passed away peacefully at his home on December 23, 2025. He was born on May 7, 1942. He was a lifelong resident of Coal City. He was well known and respected by his community.

In his early years he worked for his family logging business, Quality Overhaul in Talladega and United Chair in Leeds. He ran his own successful trucking business, and then was the shop foreman at Interstate Freight until his retirement.

He enjoyed nature; he loved hunting, fishing, gardening, fossil and arrowhead hunting. He also loved spending time with his family, which was his entire universe. At the center of that universe was his beloved and devoted wife Cathy.

He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Cathy; daughters Charlotte Warrender, Robin Layfield (Danny Aldridge), Cheri Jett (Jon), Alicia Dawn Howard (Chris), Pamela St. John (Jered), Laura Adkins (Mark); Grandchildren Angela Wilson, Andy Layfield, Adam Sweatt, Chasity Lowery, Hayden Staples, Courtney Taylor, Alex Cross, Christian Righter and Mason Cross; 11 great grandchildren; his brothers William P. Smith (Tracy) and Roy M. Smith (Lasonna), and a host of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by daughter Jeanna Gail Smith and his son Joseph M Quezada; his parents Alfred "Rooster" and Willie Dean Smith, and his brother Jackie A. Smith.

Funeral services will be held at Usrey Funeral Home at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 27, 2025, which his son-in-law Jon Jett will officiate. Interment will be at St. Clair Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations to Children's Hospital in Birmingham.

Condolences may be offered online at www.usreyfuneralhome.com.
