Smith, Robert "Bob" – of Burt, age 79, passed away Thursday, January 15, 2026, at Hampton Manor. Funeral services will be held at 11AM, Tuesday, January 20, 2026, at O'Guinn Family Funeral Home in Montrose. Burial to follow in Cook Cemetery with full military honors. The family will receive visitors on Monday at the funeral home from 5PM until 8PM and on Tuesday from 10AM until the time of service. Robert was born December 4, 1946, in Saginaw, Michigan to the late Frederick and Elsie Smith. A proud graduate of Chesaning High School, he excelled in track and relays. Robert served his country as a dedicated member of the United States Army during the Vietnam War, where he was honored with the Purple Heart, as well as a Vietnam Campaign Medal, Service Medal, and National Defense Service Medal. His bravery as a tunnel rat during the war exemplified his unwavering commitment to serving others. After his military service, Robert embarked on a fulfilling career at General Motors, where he worked on the assembly line for over 30 years. His strong work ethic and determination earned him the respect and admiration of his colleagues. Robert was not only a devoted veteran and hardworking employee; he was also a loving family man. The light of his life, however, was his beloved grandchildren, who brought him immense joy. His love for family was matched only by his passion for the outdoors. He spent many delightful days hunting with his brother and fishing with friends, often accompanied by his signature sarcastic wit. Robert was a member of the Eagles in Hale, Michigan. He also dedicated his time to his community as a volunteer firefighter for Taymouth Township, embodying the spirit of service throughout his life.
Surviving are: Children: Melissa (Aaron) Walter, Aaron Smith and Melanie Smith; Grandchildren: Trent (Page) Szostak, Jenna (Saleen) Szostak, Amber Szostak, Keaton Smith, Carson Smith and Cecelia Sanderson; Great grandchild, Hank Szostak; Brother, David Smith; Friends, Susan and Frank Sauder. He is preceded in passing by his parents: Frederick and Elsie Smith, Sister, Jennifer Waltser.

Dave and Family,
I"m sad to hear of Bob's passing. I first meant him in Jr.High in Chesaning.
He had such a clever wit and he could always make me smile. He was a good friend both in Jr. High and High School. He was the first guy I danced with at a Jr.High dance.
My thoughts and Prayers to you all.
