ROBERT STEWART Obituary

STEWART, Robert George Age 82, of Gloucester, died on Thursday January 1. He was born in Oak Park, Illinois, on May 17, 1943, to the late George and Virginia (Tropf) Stewart. He was a 1965 magna com laude graduate of the University of Notre Dame, after which he was commissioned in the United States Navy, serving for five years on the staff of Admiral Hyman Rickover, who was known as the father of the nuclear Navy. He then went on to pursue his law degree at Harvard Law School, graduating cum laude in 1973. Bob met his wife, Carolyn, playing bridge in Washington, D.C. in 1967 and they were married there in 1970. They lived in Watertown and on Beacon Hill, before settling in Annisquam in 1983. After having been a partner in the former Boston law firm of Hutchins and Wheeler, Bob established his own practice in Gloucester, where he specialized in trusts and estates and advanced tax planning. He earned a master's degree in taxation at Boston University School of Law, where he served as an adjunct professor for many years and for a time as interim director of the Graduate Tax Program. He had been a fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel. Bob was active in his community, serving for 22 years on the Gloucester Zoning Board of Appeals. He was a former president of the Cape Ann Symphony and served on the Board of Pathways for Children. He had been a longtime member of the Annisquam Yacht Club and the Essex County Club. Bob was an accomplished pianist, an excellent cook, an enthusiastic golfer, and a lover of fine wine. For a number of years, he was the accompanist for the Annisquam Village Players annual summer productions. He often played for services at Christ Episcopal Church in Bethel, VT, when he and Carolyn were at their home in Granville, VT. He enjoyed traveling in Europe and frequently to St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands, where he and Carolyn vacationed for many years. Bob is survived by Carolyn (King), his wife of 55 years; as well as two sisters, Kay Holcombe (Frank) of Gaithersburg, MD and Janet Rauch (Paul) of Naples, FL; and brother, Michael of L'Anse, MI; cousin, Alice McCarthy (Tom) of Rockville, MD; niece, Anne Holcombe Fiorita; and two nephews, Paul and Scott Rauch; his chosen family, the Severances and Vern, who rescued us all. His life will be celebrated at St. John's Episcopal Church, 48 Middle St., Gloucester, on Saturday, January 31, at 11:00 a.m. Memorial gifts may be made to St. John's Church, Gloucester; Christ Episcopal Church, Bethel, VT; Pathways for Children; The Open Door; or Lifebridge North Shore (for Grace Center). To further honor Bob's memory, for the love of God, vote for Democrats in 2026 and beyond. Arrangements by the Campbell Funeral Home, 61 Middle Street, GLOUCESTER.
